Lamborghini to Introduce SUV - Car Research

by Auto News on February 2, 2012

Following the trend of other ultra luxury and exotic car makers, Lamborghini said it will introduce a one-of-a-kind SUV/crossover concept this year.

According to Automotive News, a high-level manager at Lamborghini?s parent company, Audi, confirmed that recent speculation regarding the creation of a Lambo SUV is correct. The new SUV will debut at the Beijing auto show this April and will eventually expand Lamborghini?s product lineup when it enters the production stage. The exotic car maker originally planned on selling less than 1,500 of the new SUVs each year. The biggest markets for the SUV will be China and the US, reports AN.

The four-seater SUV will likely be equipped with a detuned version of the Gallardo?s V10 engine good for 580 horsepower. Yet another possibility is introducing a hybrid, four-wheel drive version that combines a V10 with an incredibly powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack, providing almost 700 horsepower. The new Lamborghini vehicle will likely have the same underpinnings as the next-generation Audi A7.

The closest vehicle that could be compared with the new Lamborghini is the latest?Maserati Kubang SUV concept, introduced at the Detroit auto show last month. The Kubang, loaded with a V8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, will start the assembling process in 2013. Other high-end auto brands have recently decided to build their first SUVs for the consumer market. Porsche was the first in 2003 to build a wildly successful ultra-luxury SUV, the Cayenne, which has now sold over 100,000 copies. Bentley is also in talks to create a lux SUV to sell for around $140,000.
