Tips for Overcoming Self Doubt
Self doubt stems from negative inner voices in your head. These voices are in the form of negative self talks such as "I can't do it" and criticisms that you've heard and believed like "You can't do it."
Self doubt causes procrastination, lack of self confidence and distrust. You don't believe in yourself and your capabilities. Something has happened in the past that made you doubt yourself. You may not have been able to overcome self-doubt because instead of admitting and challenging your uncertainties, you focus on why something won't work.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 1 - Acknowledge and Accept It
The first tip for overcoming self doubt is to admit that you don't have faith in yourself and you are afraid. You won't start something or continue with what you are doing because you fear that you will fail, be humiliated or ridiculed. By acknowledging that you distrust yourself, you can focus on the real issue instead of looking for something or someone to blame.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 2 - Listen to Your Inner Voices
One of the ways to hear what you are saying to yourself is to write your thoughts. Write this statement on a piece of paper.
I want to lose weight.
List down everything that come out of your mind. Don't sensor anything. The first few thoughts are the obvious and familiar. But as you push yourself to continue writing, you'll find that there are a few core beliefs that are causing you to doubt yourself. Your list may include statements such as...
- I can't do it because I've tried it before and I failed.
- It's in my genes. My mother was also overweighed and so was my grandmother.
- I am afraid to do it because they will laugh at me if I fail.
- My mother told me that it's OK to be fat as long as I am happy.
- What for? Nobody is going to like me anyway.
Once you have finished writing, look at your list. Do you notice that most of them are limiting beliefs?
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 3 - Question and Challenge Your Limiting Beliefs
Based on the list that you have, ask yourself questions such as :
- Who said so?
- What makes me believe that this statement is true?
- What would happen if I continue to believe this statement?
- What if I don't believe this statement any longer? How would I act?
- What would it cost me in my relationships, my health and my finances if I don't let go of these beliefs?
When you get an answer to a question, question the answers. Do this exercise until you feel that sticking to the existing beliefs will cause you more pain than changing.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 4 - Replace with Positive Affirmations
When you have finished with the exercise to get rid of your limiting beliefs, write down positive statements such as:
- I choose to love my body and treat it with total respect.
- I choose to have positive expectancy and attract successful outcome.
- I choose to make it easy for me to be confident.
- I choose to trust myself and know the right thing to say and do.
- I choose to no longer carry the burden of the past with me.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 5 - Visualize a New Self Image
Speed up the process of overcoming self doubt and developing a new image and self confidence with visualization exercise. Before you start visualizing, imagine the person you want to become. Put yourself in a relaxed state of body and mind by doing deep breathing exercise. Once you are in relaxed state of mind, create the mental pictures and repeat the exercise each night.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 6 - Set New Goals and Take Action
Set a list of new goals. One of the best ways to fight your fears and to overcome self doubt is to take consistent action. Do the things that you were afraid to do before. Each action will produce result, build your confidence and develop faith in yourself.
If you make a mistake, don't personalize it. Say to yourself, "I choose to allow myself to make mistakes. But I am better than this. The next time I choose to be more efficient."
Recall successful things that you have accomplished. Reward yourself each time you succeed in overcoming self doubt. Give yourself positive feedbacks and comments such as "Yes, I did it" or Yes, I can do it."
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 7 - Measure Your Progress
Another tip for overcoming self doubt is to monitor your thoughts. Keep a journal and write down your thoughts when you notice that you are afraid to do something. Be aware of what you are telling yourself. Take note also of the things you said to yourself silently or out loud to fight your fear, insecurity and doubt. When you know what motivates or inspires you to act, you can use the same strategy.
Notice how many times you condemn or criticize yourself in a day. It helps to notice so that you can stop it. As the days go by, you should see a decrease.
Take note of criticisms that you receive from other people. If a certain person keeps belittling you, distance yourself.
Overcoming Self Doubt No. 8 - Feed Your Mind with Positive Suggestions
You must guard your mind from taking in negative elements. You should also feed it with positive suggestions and information. Make it a habit to read something of value every day.
