You have an estate plan. Now know when to update it! ? United ...

In our June 27, 2012 blog, Holleigh Baker discussed the various basic estate planning documents. If you already have all of your basic estate planning documents, congratulations! You have come a long way. But you should also know that you are not finished, because part of the estate planning process is to periodically update your plan.

As your financial advisors, the Wealth Management Group at United Bank & Trust sees it as our role and responsibility to ensure that you have the most tax efficient and up-to-date estate plan that you can have. We understand that you are too busy to think of your estate plan once it is drawn up and signed. Our job, however, is to refresh you on the terms of the plan, update you on the latest changes in applicable law and work with your estate planning attorney to make sure your estate plan continues to suit your needs.

There is no exact science behind when to update your estate planning documents. On a very basic level, they should be updated any time the following occurs:

? There is a significant change in the law that impacts your situation
? A significant life event occurs or your intentions change

Many estate planning attorneys have their clients on a regular review schedule to occasionally take a fresh look at the estate planning documents. They will, in addition to your Wealth Management Group financial advisor, keep you up-to-date on changes in applicable law and discuss how it may impact your estate planning goals. In addition to the regular review with your attorney, consider updating your estate plan when any the following occur:

? The person or people you named as fiduciary are no longer able or interested in serving in that role. They may have moved away, predeceased or perhaps your relationship with them has changed such that you no longer desire to have them serve as your fiduciary.
? Your family situation changes. Either you get divorced or married, have children or your children get married and/or have their own children.
? You inherit a significant sum of money or otherwise acquire additional wealth.
? Your asset values significantly increase or decline.
? You move to another state.
? You purchase or sell a closely held business.
? You learn that one of your beneficiaries is disabled or incapacitated and has special needs.
? Your children grow up and they are financially mature, and you decide that keeping the assets in trust for them no longer makes sense.
? You want to change your beneficiaries altogether or change the amount your beneficiaries will receive.
? Several years go by without reviewing your estate plan.

The above are just a few reasons to update your estate plan. Although it is very easy not to think about it once you have done it, it is very important to update your estate plan from time to time. Please call on your Wealth Management Group financial advisor to help navigate you through the updating process and make sure your estate planning goals are met.

Stars' missing elements could signal lurking small planets

Solar chemistry suggests best places to hunt

Web edition : 1:08 pm

BEIJING ? Rocky planets zipping around distant stars might reveal themselves in the chemical elements missing from their host star.

Compared to stars like it, the sun contains fewer planet-building elements such as aluminum, calcium and silicon, Jorge Melendez of the University of Sao Paolo in Brazil said on August 27 at the International Astronomical Union?s general assembly meeting. ?For some reason, the sun is missing these more heavy elements.? So stars like the sun might be a good place to hunt for rocky planets ? and Melendez and his colleagues are doing just that.

While astronomers already knew that stars accompanied by giant planets contain more heavy elements, this work suggests that chemistry could also flag the presence of smaller, terrestrial planets.

So far, one candidate shines brighter than the rest: a star called HIP 56948, 200 light-years from Earth, whose light very closely resembles the sun?s chemical signature. While no planets have been found orbiting that star yet, Melendez is still looking.

?That happens to be the star that?s an almost identical copy of the sun,? Melendez said. ?In our opinion, it could be a very good target.?

To assess the elemental signatures written into the solar twins, Melendez and his colleagues spied on 11 stars using the Magellan telescope in Chile. The scientists found that the sun is different from most of those stars, and suggest that building rocky planets depletes the amount of planet ingredients available to the forming star.

While the idea is compelling, it needs to be verified, said Nader Haghighipour of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. ?It?s an approach that, considering our solar system, seems to be viable,? he says. ?Until they find one or two systems with planets, it?s hard to say anything.?

Melendez and his colleagues are currently looking for small planets around roughly 75 solar twins, using the super-sensitive HARPS instrument at the La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Possible Therapy For Tamoxifen-Resistant Breast Cancer Identified

  • The hormone estrogen stimulates the growth of breast cancers that are estrogen-receptor positive, the most common form of breast cancer.
  • The drug tamoxifen blocks this estrogen effect and prolongs the lives of, and helps to cure, patients with estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
  • About 30 percent of these patients have tumors that are resistant to tamoxifen.
  • This study shows how these resistant tumors survive and grow, and it identifies an experimental agent that targets these breast cancers.

?

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A study by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC ? James) has discovered how tamoxifen-resistant breast-cancer cells grow and proliferate. It also suggests that an experimental agent might offer a novel targeted therapy for tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer.

?

Like a second door that opens after the first door closes, a signaling pathway called hedgehog (Hhg) can promote the growth of breast-cancer cells after tamoxifen shuts down the pathway activated by the hormone estrogen. A second signaling pathway, called PI3K/AKT, is also involved.

?

Activation of the Hhg pathway renders tamoxifen treatment ineffective and enables the tumor to resume its growth and progression. As part of the study, the researchers analyzed over 300 human tumors and found that the tumors with an activated Hhg pathway had a worse prognosis.

?

Finally, the researchers showed that an experimental drug called vismodegib, which blocks the Hhg pathway, inhibits the growth of tamoxifen-resistant human breast tumors in an animal model. The drug is in clinical trials testing for other types of cancer.

?

Currently, chemotherapy is used to treat hormone-resistant breast cancers, but this is associated with significant side effects. This study has identified targeted therapies that could be an alternative to chemotherapy for these resistant tumors.

?

?

?Our findings suggest that we can target this pathway in patients with estrogen-receptor breast cancers who have failed tamoxifen therapy,? says first author Dr. Bhuvaneswari Ramaswamy, a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer at the OSUCCC ? James.

?

?We describe a link between the hedgehog signaling pathway, which promotes tamoxifen resistance, and the PI3K/AKT pathway,? says principal investigator Sarmila Majumder, research assistant professor in molecular and cellular biochemistry at the OSUCCC ? James. ?Targeting the hedgehog pathway alone or in combination with the PI3K/AKT pathway could be a novel therapeutic option for treating tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer.?

?

Ramaswamy, an assistant professor of internal medicine at Ohio State, emphasizes that novel options are needed for these patients.

?

?A combined targeted therapy using both hedgehog and PI3K inhibitors could lead to a novel treatment for endocrine-resistant tumors in the future without use of chemotherapy,? she says. ?And these agents we have identified are all in clinical development for other kinds of cancer.?

?

Approximately 230,000 new cases of breast cancer are expected in the United States in 2012, and almost 40,000 Americans will die from the disease. More than two-thirds of breast cancer cases show high levels of the estrogen receptor (ER). Doctors use the drug tamoxifen to treat these ER-positive tumors, and Ramaswamy notes that the drug has improved the disease-free survival of people with ER-positive breast cancer by 50 percent.

?

?But 30 to 40 percent of patients taking tamoxifen become resistant to it after about five years,? she says. Currently, there are very limited options for these patients and most end up receiving chemotherapy.

?

Key findings for this study include:

Tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer depends on the Hhg pathway for cell growth;

The PI3K/AKT pathway protects key Hhg signaling proteins from degradation, which promotes activation of the Hhg pathway.

Analysis of 315 invasive breast cancers showed that high levels of the protein GLI1, an important Hhg marker, was correlated with poorer disease-free survival and overall survival.

?

?Our next step is to organize a clinical trial to evaluate vismodegib in patients with tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer,? Ramaswamy says.

?

Funding from the NIH/National Cancer Institute (grants CA137567 and CA133250) and a Pelotonia Idea grant supported this research.

?

Other Ohio State researchers involved in this study were Yuanzhi Lu, Kun-yu Teng, Gerard Nuovo, Xiaobai Li and Charles L. Shapiro.

?

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State?s cancer program as ?exceptional,? the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program?s 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a ?Top Hospital? as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by

The Republican Platform on Immigration: More Federal Enforcement, More State Enforcement, No Amnesty, No DREAM Act

Here is the 2012 Gop Platform?

The portion specifically pertaining to immigration reads as follows:

The Rule of Law: Legal Immigration

The greatest asset of the American economy is the American worker. Just as immigrant labor helped build our country in the past, today?s legal immigrants are making vital contributions in every aspect of our national life. Their industry and commitment to American values strengthens our economy, enriches our culture, and enables us to better understand and more effectively compete with the rest of the world. Illegal immigration undermines those benefits and affects U.S. workers. In an age of terrorism, drug cartels, human trafficking, and crim-inal gangs, the presence of millions of unidentified persons in this country poses grave risks to the safety and the sovereignty of the United States. Our highest priority, therefore, is to secure the rule of law both atour borders and at ports of entry.

We recognize that for most of those seeking entry into this country, the lack of respect for the rule of law in their homelands has meant economic exploitation and political oppression by corrupt elites.? In this country, the rule of law guarantees equal treatment to every individual, including more than onemillion immigrants to whom we grant permanent residence every year. That is why we oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally vioating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it. Granting amnesty only rewards and encourages more law breaking. We support the mandatory use of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (S.A.V.E.) program?an internet-based system that verifies the lawful presence of applicants?prior to the granting of any State or federal government entitlements or IRS refunds. We insist upon enforcement at the workplace through verification systems so that jobs can be available to all legal workers. Use of the E-verify program?an internet-based system that verifies the employment authorization and identity of employees?must be made mandatory nation- wide. State enforcement effortsin the workplace must be welcomed, not attacked. When Americans need jobs, it is absolutely essential that we protect them from illegal labor in the workplace. In addition, it is why we demand tough penalties forthose who practice identity theft, deal in fraudulent documents, and traffic in human beings. It is why we support Republican legislation to give the Department of Homeland Security long-term detention authority to keep dangerous but undeportable aliens off our streets, expedite expulsion of criminal aliens, and make gang membership a deportable offense.

The current Administration?s approach to immigration has undermined the rule of law at every turn. It has lessened work-site enforcement?and even allows the illegal aliens it does uncover to walk down the street to the next employer?and challenged legitimate State efforts to keep communities safe, suing them for trying to enforce the law when the federal government refuses to do so. It has created a back-door amnesty program unrecognized in law, granting worker authorization to illegal aliens, and shown little regard for the life-and-death situations facing themen and women of the border patrol.

Perhaps worst of all, the current Administration has failed to enforce the legal means for workers or employers who want to operate within the law.

In contrast, a Republican Administration and Congress will partner with local governments through cooperative enforcement agreements in Section 287g of the Immigration and Nationality Act to make communities safer for all and will consider, in light of both current needs and historic practice, the utility of a legal and reliable source of foreign labor where needed through a new guest worker program. We will create humane procedures to encourage illegal aliens to return home voluntarily, while enforcing the law against those who overstay their visas.

State efforts to reduce illegal immigration must be encouraged, not attacked. The pending Department of Justice lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina, and Utah must be dismissed immediately. The double-layered fencing on the border that was enacted by Congress in 2006, but never completed, must finally be built. In order to restore the rule of law, federal funding should be denied to sanctuary cities that violate federal law and endanger their own citizens, and federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens, in open defiance of federal law.

We are grateful to the thousands of new immigrants, many of them not yet citizens, who are serving in the Armed Forces. Their patriotism should encourage us all to embrace the newcomers legally among us, assist their journey to full citizenship, and help their communities avoid isolation from the mainstream of society. To that end, while we encourage the retention and transmission of heritage tongues, we support English as the nation?s official language, a unifying force essential for the educational and economic advancement of?not only immigrant communities?but also our nation as a whole. (emphasis in bold added).

Japan leans toward zero nuclear stance, caution remains

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government, wary of public opinion ahead of an election, is leaning toward setting a target to eliminate atomic power by 2030 - a major policy shift for an economy that had planned to boost the role of nuclear energy before the Fukushima crisis.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is expected to call a snap election within months and with his Democratic Party's (DPJ) ratings sagging, pressure is mounting to respond to a growing grass-roots anti-nuclear movement and surveys showing that most voters want to abandon atomic energy eventually.

Such a decision would fly in the face of objections from big business lobbies, which say an aggressive programme to exit nuclear power will boost electricity rates and force companies to move production - and jobs - overseas.

"I think the zero by 2030 scenario is becoming mainstream (in the government)," said DPJ lawmaker Satoshi Arai, a former minister and a member of a panel thrashing out the party's stance ahead of the election for parliament's lower house.

"I think it is (because of) the election," he told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

In contrast to polls of ordinary voters, a Reuters survey of big Japanese firms showed that while one in five backed the zero option, the rest of respondents supported a continued role for nuclear energy.

But some economists say a policy shift would spell opportunities for growth, both for companies now positioning themselves to profit from the change and the economy overall.

"A sustained focus on energy technology improvement should be very positive for certain sectors or producers but also very positive for users, who need increased incentives to use energy more efficiently," said Robert Feldman, chief economist at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities in Tokyo.

Feldman rejected suggestions that an abrupt policy change would prompt firms to move overseas "because it takes a static view of technology. Why would technology stop in its tracks?"

The earthquake and tsunami that crippled the Fukushima power plant and caused a series of meltdowns prompted cancellation of a 2010 plan to raise the share of nuclear power in electricity production to more than 50 percent by 2030 from nearly 30 percent.

All 50 of Japan's reactors were halted within months of the accident, with two since reconnected to the grid. Policymakers are now considering three options for the future of the sector.

PARTY DIVIDED

Most experts had expected Noda to opt for a scenario that would put nuclear power's share at around 15 percent of electricity production by 2030. But growing anti-nuclear protests combined with strong support for the zero option at public hearings and in opinion polls has forced the government to rethink, experts and politicians said.

"A majority of people are eager to get rid of nuclear power - that is our conclusion after we discussed a variety of public opinions submitted to the government this time," Economics Minister Motohisa Furukawa told reporters on Tuesday.

Besides the zero and 15 percent options, a third scenario would put nuclear power's share at 20-25 percent by 2030.

The earthquake and tsunami devastated Tokyo Electric Power Co's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant north of Tokyo and forced about 160,000 people to flee their homes, many of whom may never return. The disaster undermined public confidence in nuclear power, promoted for decades as safe, clean and cheap.

Noda's decision to approve the restart of the two reactors galvanized the anti-nuclear movement.

But Noda's party is split and the prime minister seems reluctant to wean Japan from nuclear power too soon. "There are many people who say different things and no one can say whether the government will choose zero or 15 percent at this point," said a source with knowledge of the debate.

Some experts still expect the government to pick the 15 percent scenario, the logical outcome if reactors are shut after 40 years as required "in principle" by law, and no new reactors are built. It could, however, add that Japan will aim to exit atomic energy longer term, a stance the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party may also adopt in its own campaign platform.

"While the Noda Administration ... (is) openly talking about a zero nuclear policy, we believe this is simply not doable. A 15 percent nuclear policy will likely be adopted after all the protests and arguments," said a report by energy consultants FACTS Global Energy.

Demand for liquefied natural gas in Japan, the world's biggest consumer of the fuel, will rise further to run power stations as renewable sources such as solar and wind power would not fill the gap fast enough, the report said.

Arai, who favors the 15 percent solution, echoed the concerns. "If we move faster, technological and system development and huge changes in society will be needed," he said. "I don't think that is possible in 15-20 years."

Lunar 'hit-and-run': New research eclipses existing theories on formation of the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Moon is believed to have formed from a collision, 4.5 billion years ago, between Earth and an impactor the size of Mars, known as "Theia." Over the past decades scientists have simulated this process and reproduced many of the properties of the Earth-Moon system; however, these simulations have also given rise to a problem known as the Lunar Paradox: the Moon appears to be made up of material that would not be expected if the current collision theory is correct.

A recent study published in Icarus proposes a new perspective on the theory in answer to the paradox.

If current theories are to be believed, analyses of the various simulations of the Earth-Theia collision predict that the Moon is mostly made up of material from Theia. However, studying materials from both Earth and the Moon, shows remarkable similarities. In fact, elements found on the Moon show identical isotopic properties to those found on Earth.

Given it is very unlikely that both Theia and Earth had identical isotopic compositions (as all other known solar system bodies, except the Moon, appear to be different) this paradox casts doubt over the dominant theory for the Moon formation. Moreover, for some elements, like Silicon, the isotopic composition is the result of internal processes, related to the size of the parent body. Given Theia was smaller than Earth, its Silicon isotope composition should have definitely been different from that of Earth's mantle.

A group of researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland, have now made a significant breakthrough in the story of the formation of the Moon, suggesting an answer to this Lunar Paradox. They explored a different geometry of collisions than previously simulated, also considering new impacts configurations such as the so-called, "hit-and-run collisions," where a significant amount of material is lost into space on orbits unbound to Earth..

"Our model considers new impact parameters, which were never tested before. Besides the implications for the Earth-Moon system itself, the considerably higher impact velocity opens up new possibilities for the origin of the impactor and therefore also for models of terrestrial planet formation," explains lead author of the study, Andreas Reufer.

"While none of the simulations presented in their research provides a perfect match for the constraints from the actual Earth-Moon-system, several do come close," adds Alessandro Morbidelli, one of the Icarus' Editors. "This work, therefore, suggests that a future exhaustive exploration of the vast collisional parameter space may finally lead to the long-searched solution of the lunar paradox."

What a Bad Listing Appointment! | Albuquerque Real Estate ...

? Posted by Rich Cederberg on Aug 29, 2012 in For Sellers | 0 comments

?

I went on a listing appointment about two weeks ago, and as I walked up the driveway to the house I noticed that someone had bumped into the side of the garage, knocking off the stucco down to the lath. The crumbling stucco was laying in a pile on the ground below it. I made a mental note to mention this little blemish to the sellers after we?d had a chance to sit down and get to know each other.

I knocked on the door, introduced myself to the property owners, and began to tour their home. These sellers had called me becaue they were trying to decide whether or not to list their home for sale in the fall or stay in Albuquerque for awhile longer. They wanted to get an idea of how much I thought the house could sell for.

As a Realtor, I am often invited into peoples homes for this reason. It can be a very uncomfortable situation when they are difficult things that need to be said when you are a guest in someone?s home. Frequently, you?re telling people about things they don?t know already know about.

On this particular day, the appointment I had was different. The sellers were very aware of the problems I was pointing out to them.

Our tour started in the kitchen. As I stood there looking at the mismatched appliances, one white and very old, ?one black and only kind of old, and one brand new stainless steel refrigerator, I was about to suggest that they invest in two new appliances when the sellers said ?If we?re going to stay, we?re going to buy all new matching appliances.?

I raised an eyebrow, and gently said ?buyers are going to want matching appliances too.? The sellers didn?t react, I wondered if they didn?t hear me or if they were ignoring me.

The kitchen and living room were tiled, which is always very desirable, but when we walked into one of the bedrooms, I saw large pet stains on the carpet. This time I has to speak up more forceably and tell them that buyers are not going to buy a house with carpet that has large pet stains. Their reply? They?d bought a home once with pet stains on the carpet, surely other buyers wouldn?t mind. I patiently started to explain that the market is different now, and that in their part of town it is sill difficult to sell, but I could tell they weren?t listening. They did say that they had been planning on doing the carpet, but only if they stayed.

Realizing that this appointment was going downhill fast, I asked if ?could see the backyard that they has spoken of so glowingly on the phone about with me. Surely it would be as beautiful as they had said, right?

Indeed, parts of the backyard were very nice, but there was one problem. At one time, they had started to build an outdoor kitchen. Great idea, right? They had poured and concrete slab for the kitchen and installed some cabinets, but there were no doors on them. There was also no sink or no grill, it was like a shell of an outdoor kitchen with a large piece of concrete sticking out of the ground.

Their plan for this eyesore? Put up a rod and hang a curtain in front of the disaster. If buyers wanted to see it, they could pull back the curtain, if they didn?t care they wouldn?t bother.

By this time I was no longer interested in listing their house for sale. You see, this is serious business.Selling a home is not easy and these kind of things need to be done. You can?t have beat up old appliances that are mismatched and ugly in your kitchen. You can?t have carpets that look bad and smell bad, and you can?t leave half done home improvement projects for the next owners. It just won?t work.

I cut to the chase and told them what their house was probably worth. Needless to say, that didn?t go well, surely I should have priced their home 20% above the market because they had a nice wine rack in the living room and a new tool shed in back. Hadn?t I considered those important items in my estimate???

At this point I politely excused myself, explaining that I only listed homes that I thought would sell in their current condition and that their house didn?t meet that criteria.

They must have thought I was crazy. But I?m not, I?m realistic, and that is not how you sell your house.

Zebrafish study explains why the circadian rhythm affects your health

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Disruptions to the circadian rhythm can affect the growth of blood vessels in the body, thus causing illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, and cancer, according to a new study from Link?ping University and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

The circadian rhythm is regulated by a "clock" that reacts to both incoming light and genetic factors.

In an article now being published in the scientific journal Cell Reports, it is demonstrated for the first time that disruption of the circadian rhythm immediately inhibit blood vessel growth in zebra fish embryos.

Professor Yihai Cao leads a research group, which has demonstrated that the breaking point is the production of a very important signalling substance: vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The formation of this substance requires a normal circadian rhythm.

During experiments with hours-old zebra fish embryos, the researchers manipulated their circadian rhythm through exposing them to lighting conditions varying from constant darkness to constant light. The growth of blood vessels in the various groups was then studied. The results showed that exposure to constant light (1800 lux) markedly impaired blood vessel growth; additionally, it affected the expression of genes that regulate the circadian clock.

"The results can definitely be translated into clinical circumstances. Individuals with disrupted circadian rhythms ? for example, shift workers who work under artificial lights at night, people with sleeping disorders or a genetic predisposition ? should be on guard against illnesses associated with disrupted blood vessel growth," says Lasse Dahl Jensen, researcher in Cardiovascular Physiology at Link?ping University (LiU), and lead writer of the article.

Such diseases include heart attack, stroke, chronic inflammation, and cancer. Disruptions in blood vessel growth can also affect foetal development, women's reproductive cycles, and the healing of wounds.

Riot police detain Muslim youths after they pelted stones at the police outside Masjid Musa Mosque in Majengo, Mombasa, Kenya, Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. Police clashed with Muslims protesting near to the spot where slain cleric Aboud Rogo used to preach. Rogo, who was accused by the U.S. and U.N. for allegedly having links to an al-Qaida affiliated Somali militant group, was shot dead in his car while traveling with members of his family on Monday. His death sparked off street protests by hundreds of angry Muslim youth, who accuse the Kenyan police of the murder, leading to the death of one person and vandalism of at least two churches. (AP) ? Police and protesters fought running battles as a violent backlash to the killing of a radical Islamic preacher continued Tuesday in Kenya's second-largest city of Mombasa, which left several people hospitalized, police and human rights officials said.

The killing Monday of Aboud Rogo Mohammed, who was shot to death as he drove in his car with his family, falls into a pattern of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances of suspected terrorists, allegedly being orchestrated by Kenyan police, human rights groups say. The attack has brought to the surface tensions in a city established centuries ago by Muslim traders from the Arabian peninsula and the Indian subcontinent, now home to hundreds of thousands of people of Arab descent and a large Somali population.

Police officers teargased youths on their second day of protests. Hussein Khalid of the Muslim for Human Rights group said police were using teargas against stone-throwing protesters. Khalid said one person was stabbed and hospitalized Tuesday.

Regional Police boss Aggrey Adoli said officers were forced to keep violent protests from spreading after protests they led to the death of one person and the vandalism of two churches and businesses on Monday.

"We are trying to contain them so that we don't create more deaths. Deaths and destruction of property will not help with anything," Adoli said.

Mohammed was recently sanctioned by the U.S. government and the U.N. for his alleged connection to an al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group, al-Shabab. He is the fifth alleged Muslim extremist who has been killed or who disappeared in the last four months, according to human rights campaigners. One corpse was found mutilated and the other four men vanished

Mohammed was shot dead as he drove with his family in Mombasa. His wife was wounded in the leg, said Mohammed's father who was also in the car along with Mohammed's 5-year-old daughter. He said he and the girl weren't injured.

Adoli said police have asked Muslim elders and religious leaders to urge the young protesters to stop the violence. A team of investigators from police headquarters in Nairobi arrived in Mombasa to start investigating Mohammed's killing, he said.

Police believe that Mohammed had ties to al-Qaida and was part of terror cell with links to al-Shabab militants that was planning to carry out bomb attacks in Kenya during Christmas. Other members of cell include Briton Samantha Lewthwaite, who police say is on the run. She is the widow of Jermaine Lindsay, one of the suicide bombers who killed 52 commuters in multiple bombings of London's transport system on July 7, 2005.

The other is Briton Jermaine Grant, sentenced to three years in prison for immigration offenses and lying to a government official about his identity. Grant is also charged with conspiring to commit a felony and possessing explosive materials

In January, Mohammed was charged with possession of a cache of guns, ammunition and detonators. He also faced charges of membership in al-Shabab

Al-Shabab has vowed to carry out a large-scale attack in Nairobi in retaliation for Kenya sending troops into neighboring Somalia to fight al-Shabab. The Kenyan government blames al-Shabab for several kidnappings on Kenyan soil, including those of four Europeans. The kidnappings greatly harmed the Kenya's coastal tourism industry.

Mohammed was acquitted in 2005 of murder charges for the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned tourist hotel near Mombasa which killed more than 12 people. In conjunction with that attack, two surface-to-air missiles were fired at an Israeli-owned airliner packed with Israeli tourists as it took off from Mombasa. The missiles narrowly missed.

Prosecutors at the trial said Mohammed had been in contact with Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, al-Qaida's East Africa head, who the U.S. said masterminded the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which killed 231 people, including 12 Americans. A Somali soldier shot the al-Qaida leader dead at a checkpoint in Mogadishu, Somalia, last year.

Back in the good old days of DOS, programming was simple: you write a set of instructions, it goes through them one by one, and if there is a problem during the run it will take you right to the line where the error occurred, and you could figure out what led to it. Granted I didn't really know how to use functions and classes to organize code then, but they did exist.

But now, more and more complicated development environments make debugging nearly impossible. Granted that putting code into functions and classes improves organization and readability, but I've worked with several environments that don't even (by default) tell you what line in your program (or the last line you wrote before some pre-made code deeper down) it was on when a run-time error occurs! This leaves me either running it again and again with debugging hacks to find the problem, or else trying to find out how the heck to use the special-purpose "debugger" for this.

I've aced programming assignments in school, but school is not likely to teach me anywhere near 100% of what I'll need for the real world. My professors might be giving me TOO many functions, classes, etc. to start with!

Although if I can get a job I'm unlikely to be programming anything completely from scratch, at least.

Well, I didn't really say it was more efficient, just that I prefer not to use IDE's.

Also, it's rude to refer to random people as "he." Not everyone on the internet is a guy.

Software development advances by introducing greater levels of abstraction. The low-level libraries in C were built upon by higher-level abstractions in (say) Java, where string-handling functions were augmented with threading and networking libraries. From here, even higher levels of abstraction like J2EE were introduced. On top of these high-level abstractions came higher-level abstractions like Spring and Hibernate. On top of these are even higher levels like MVC flow of control. In some ways, operating at a higher level of abstraction makes typical jobs easier to do. Hibernate is easier than hand-coding database storage and retrieval code for every object. On the other hand, the whole exercise becomes a house of cards. Java has like three or four I/O libraries now. J2EE is a breathtaking mess, with JSP, JSTL, EL, and so on. JSP pages which have to use JSTL/EL and also emit JavaScript, jQuery, and CSS are almost incomprehensible. (Is that a JSTL tag, or an emitted markup tag? Is that an anonymous JavaScript array, or a CSS list?) But there's no going back. Remember, there was a time when high-level abstractions like C's string library were considered too slow.

This is sometimes true, but you're also talking about Java, which isn't a particularly common language outside Android and academia. Many advances are nothing but refactoring or accounting for hardware advances, and some higher levels of abstraction come with zero or near zero performance penalty (intelligent use of C++ templates, e.g. RapidXML).

I will say that I very often forego abstraction libraries when developing products if they don't offer very significant and tangible benefits, and I produce very efficient (likely more efficient than what people were producing in the 90s) software that is at least as feature rich as anything else you'd find these days. There are times that I develop things that people may think of as "reinventing the wheel", that really only require a couple thousand (or fewer) lines of code. It hasn't really been a problem, and maintenance is easier than dealing with an external library.

C has almost universally given way to C++ and in some cases C#. People are using toolkits like .net for rapid development.

JavaScript is powerful enough that browser development is dominating.

People are accomplishing things in "languages" like CSS that aren't even really programming languages, that you would have needed a programming language for in the past.

Realtime graphics is pretty much all done with shaders.

I've always used Emacs and the command line. What's strange is that everyone talks about how fast I complete tasks. They're amazed at how quickly I get things done. I'm not that fast, I just don't have layers between me and what I'm trying to do. I think the IDE was designed to slow programmers down and interfere with getting work done.

If you're that efficient, it's probably more you than emacs.

I don't have to fight with my IDE that often, unless it's XCode.

Well, I didn't really say it was more efficient, just that I prefer not to use IDE's.

Also, it's rude to refer to random people as "he." Not everyone on the internet is a guy.

Whatever

Are you nostalgic for interpret based languages like BASIC and Quick BASIC? If so, pick a scripting language and run with it.
