As one of Canada?s most innovative personal trainers Chris Tse and his team of trainers at Blitz Conditioning have become the go-to for weight loss and increased cardiovascular work by focusing on a holistic approach to their clients needs.
Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to get involved in personal training.
I?ve been passionate about fitness all my life and was also interested in science too.? When I went to the University of Alberta, I knew I wanted to pursue both science and fitness so I ended up taking a blend of Kinesiology and Immunology and Infection.? When I graduated I pursued both a profession in research, studying the genetics of allergy, and personal training for 6 years.? I finally decided a few years ago to take on the challenge of opening up my own fitness business with my business partner, Brett Kirkland, so I quit my research position and we created Blitz Conditioning.? I wanted to focus on creating both physical and mental change in people allowing them to be empowered by health.? I know that my scientific background has blessed me with the ability to take a look at the human body and life in a unique way and understand that health is multifactorial: we must look at all aspects of a person?s lifestyle like: stressors, nutrition, mental health, spiritual health, physical health, and many more in order to affect change in someone.? I took on the profession of a personal trainer and business owner because I wanted to be a life scientist and not simply a basic scientist.? I?m passionate about working with people in order to improve their quality of life!
Blitz?Conditioning?claims some innovations in their approach to fitness and how it molds into everyday life. Can you explain how?
Blitz Conditioning focuses not only on physical health and weight loss but also on holistic health this is what we define as fitness.? On our team we have a massage therapist and an acupuncturist but beyond this we are also involved in mental health.? It?s our primary tenet that in order to become healthier we must look at all aspects of the person, physical, mental, and spiritual.? We cannot create significant change in a person?s life until they look at all of these aspects.? Ever since the inception of Blitz Conditioning, we have also been involved in the medical community assisting people with mental illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADD and OCD with integrating fitness into their treatment regimen.? There has been a lot of research regarding positive mental health outcomes and integrating various forms of exercise.? It is our goal to become one of the leading fitness centers in Canada that specializes in assisting people with lifestyle change who suffer from mental health problems.
We also strongly believe in the community approach to fitness, we believe that in order for someone to be holistically healthy they must be integrated into a community of likeminded individuals who strive to maintain a healthy and balanced life. We also strongly believe in giving back to our city using our resources and hold fitness fundraisers or volunteer as a group at least once a month.
We also blog approximately 6 days a week on the www.blitzconditioning.com website.? Which is filled with nutrition, fitness, testimonials, and other health information.? We?re very connected via social media (twitter, facebook, and web) allowing us to educate the online community with credible information.? We want to give people the ability to empower themselves to change through the educational resources that we provide online.
We provide a lot of technical innovation in our workouts.? Our trainers are passionate about functional fitness and attempt to create exercise patterns and workout programs that do not follow the classical hypertrophy and cardiovascular workout plans.? It is our goal to challenge each person by creating a different workout regimen every time someone works out with us.? We believe that success is not a numeric goal like bench pressing a certain weight, or even weight loss, it is that we have fun with exercise and we see a change in our quality of life.
I see that they offer massage and?acupuncture?as well. How does this fit into your mentality?
We believe that holistic care like acupuncture and massage are integral to a person?s health.? People come into Blitz with muscle aches and injuries; in order for us to improve their quality of life they need to seek alternative therapies aside form fitness.? We look at the whole person and not simply their physical health.? Our community loves the fact that we have everything under one roof since they trust us for fitness and concurrently they trust us for getting the right therapists in order to service them in other matters.? Our acupuncturist, Heather Bracken, also blogs about holistic health on our website allowing us to inform our web community about how alternative approaches and assist in their lives.
What are the most important factors to growing your business in Canada??
Blitz Conditioning has seen growth beyond our wildest expectations since its inception two years ago.? We believe it?s primarily because of a few factors:
1)???? Vision: we believe that in order to create change in the individual we need to provide them with as many resources as possible.? We have partnered up with dietitians, mental health experts, and holistic health professionals in order to create a composite team that looks at all aspects of a person?s life.? We believe that our community, both online and in person need to have resources for education and accountability.? We use our social media strategy in order to both inform and communicate: our website and our Facebook page have been great resources to educate people about various aspects of holistic health, nutrition and fitness.? We utilize twitter both to inform and to communicate with our community members and others that are not in our physical community but values us as their reliable resources for health information.? We create fans of Blitz Conditioning who have in turn sought our services.
2)???? Effort: Every person in our team is driven and passionate about his or her profession.? We spend countless hours preparing articles for people to read, preparing workout or treatment regimens for our clients and training.? We live, eat, sleep and breathe health both as a community and individually in order to become leaders.? We believe that we must act as leaders in our community in order to encourage others to create change in their lives.? We look at success not as the pay check that is earned but the number of people we affect.? Brett and myself first started off this company with a dream to create change in people?s lives and we work hard in order to both encourage our team to breathe the same dream and also to fulfill it.
3)???? Community: Whether it?s our team or our greater community (client base) we believe that we grow because we all support each other in both our successes and our struggles.? We grow because people want to both see change in their lives and also give back to a supportive community.? We also believe in giving back; we involve ourselves in local charities and foundations because we believe that we owe the greater community for
4)???? Fun:? We have ton?s of fun here!? We do everything joyfully from workouts to business meetings to cleaning!? Our members see this in our team and love being a part of the fun.? Our days are filled with jokes, laughter and this desire to take life lightheartedly.
Do you have plans for expansion?
Yes.? Blitz Conditioning is slated to outgrow our current facility within a year and with this we plan on looking for a bigger home base.? We are also planning on creating satellite centers in Edmonton and Alberta within the next 5 years.? Our online services will also be expanding within the next year, we believe that high quality and well proven resources should be available online for everyone so keep an eye on our website for changes and some new products that are coming out!
Explain the partnership you?ve created with the other owners of Blitz? What sets your gym apart?
Although Brett and myself are the sole owners of the company, we believe that our community are the true owners of Blitz.? Blitz sets itself apart from all other gyms because we don?t look at ourselves as a gym, we look at ourselves as a center which empowers people to pursue a healthy lifestyle.? The pursuit translates into their ability to create greater affect their community outside of Blitz.
What is the best piece of advice you can give to the young and new personal trainers looking to make their way into the business?
Learn everything you possibly can and be crazy passionate about the people you affect.? Diplomas and certifications are great but experience life in order to truly learn.? I truly believe that I went to school and got my formal education but my true learning happened when I stepped foot outside of my classes.? People are drawn to you because you and your services because they see that you are passionate about health, but more especially how that fits in with real life.
Become passionate about your circles of influence:? know everything about your current clients: what they do, their family, their friends, because this ultimately affects their ability to see change in their health.? Forget profit margins and quotas that other companies might want you to concentrate on.? Focus on your affect.
Remember, as a personal trainer, you?ve now accepted the responsibility of being a leader in your community.? So lead and do it well.
