Storm knocks Netflix, Instagram, Pinterest offline

By Bob Sullivan

Normally, bad weather on a Friday night is a good excuse to stay home and watch a movie, but not this week. Friday night's quick-moving thunderstorms hit several states from Indiana to Maryland, but the storm's impact was felt around the Web.

The storm, which packed winds of up to 90 mph, knocked out power to millions of homes -- and to some of Amazon's Cloud services in Northern Virginia. That took Netflix offline.? Web users who went hunting for other distractions found even more frustration, as Pinterest.com was also knocked offline, and the Instagram photo-sharing service wasn't working either.

At 1:15 a.m. ET, Pinterest.com posted a simple message: "We'll be back soon." And, in a message of its Twitter account at about 1:45 a.m. ET, it said, "We're back! Our team is continuing to work on some remaining issues that may impact performance. Thanks for your patience and happy pinning!"

?

?

Amazon's Cloud services status page was full of power-related error messages. Amazon's ElastiCache, for example, indicated that starting at 8:43 p.m., the service was "affected by a power event."? At 9:25 p.m., this message was posted: "We can confirm that a large number of cache clusters are impaired. We are actively working on recovering them."

Netflix users took to Twitter to air their disbelief at the service outage.

"Netflix isn't working on possibly the most emotional night of my life. It's official ... this is NOT real life," wrote one Twitter user.?

"Everything good is down," complained another.

Neither Netflix nor Amazon can be blamed for Mother Nature's ferocious attack. The storm, which swept through Virginia and Maryland during a harrowing two-hour stretch, uprooted trees across the region, closed roads and damaged homes, and is currently blamed for at least one death.

College Student Vanishes After Getting Counseling For Breakdown

Authorities in California are searching for a missing college student who disappeared after leaving an outpatient therapy center.

Linnea Lomax, a 19-year-old student at the University of California, Davis, was last seen at an outpatient clinic on Howe Ave. in Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon.

"She was at the clinic for an all day visit, but she walked out during lunch and never came back," Lomax family spokesperson Heidi Hutchison told The Huffington Post.

According to Hutchison, Lomax recently suffered a mental breakdown while studying for finals. The young woman spent more than a week at a treatment facility but was released for outpatient therapy after she showed progress.

Lomax, a 2011 graduate of El Dorado High School in Placerville, Calif., had just completed her freshman year at UC Davis. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is studying human development, with the intent of pursuing a degree in nursing.

"Linnea is an angel. She is very smart. She is very sweet and caring," Hutchison said. "She is normally a very self-confident, self-assured and well-adjusted young woman. She has a bright future, a loving, supportive family and a heck of a lot of friends."

Jay Greeson: Football's playoff plan still lacking

The group of college presidents approved the four-team playoff model this week. It will take affect in 2014, and there was mention of a 12-year commitment to this plan. You may have heard about it; it was in most of the papers.

Everyone wanted a playoff, yet this feels so anti-climatic, so disappointing. It's like opening a sweater on Christmas. Sure it's a gift and the thought was nice and appropriate, but where's the X-Box games or a new Titleist pitching wedge.

College football fans opened a gift with the announcement of a four-team playoff on the horizon, but that gift was four teams too small. And 12 years? Really, 12 years? Sweet buckets, three presidential terms of snug sweaters and too tight decisions for a four-team draw.

Of course, it is fair to ask that if we wanted a playoff and are now unhappy with a playoff after about 14 hours after said playoff was announced then there's no pleasing us. Well, it would be fair to ask that, but it would be wrong and misdirected.

A four-team playoff is simply the lords of college football's manor giving the starving serfdom of fanhood a scrap from their table and expecting glorious applause of gratitude for their generosity. This is the worst type of plan; it's doomed two years before it starts. And it quite possibly could do what, until this very moment, was deemed unthinkable -- there's a very real possibility that a four-team playoff could make fans long for the good-old days of the BCS.

Don't think so? OK, play out last year's scenario: The four-teams that would have been in the field after the end of the regular season were LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State and Oregon. That's no Wisconsin and Stanford, which is not a good start. Now what if Boise had not missed a 35-yard field goal in a one-point loss to TCU. And what if Georgia had not dropped a half-dozen passes -- including a couple of for-sure TDs throws that could have meant a two- or three-TD lead -- in the first half of the SEC title game.

If just those two things had not happened, who was your four? Oklahoma State, Oregon, Boise State and ... Alabama? That leaves out the team that was No. 1 for most of the season in LSU and the SEC champ.

"It won't be easy to pick those four teams," ACC commissioner John Swofford told reporters. "There may be some years where it's really clear, but more often than not if you're fifth or sixth, you're going to wonder, 'Maybe I should have been there.'"

And Swafford is a playoff-supporter and a crafter of the four-team playoff second-guessing the plan the day the plan was to be hailed as the plan of all plans. Well, the stuff has hit the plan.

Granted, there still are semantics to be determined and maybe there will be delighted smiles in the details. There were no announcements about the selection committee, which must be as open as a love-stricken teenager's wallet, and a transparent selection committee could go a long way to calming some of this anxiety.

Plus, the biggest shock is not the four-team format as much as the 12-year commitment.

There are three things I have said and believed from the very beginning. This must not damage the integrity of the regular season, this needs to be an eight-team field, and this has nothing to do with fairness or fans and everything to do with finances.

While it was expected that the power brokers of college football to disregard or be indifferent to the first two, we banked on the last sentence as the great equalizer between the wants of the haves and have nots and between the powerful and the passionate.

But 12 years? Most of the marriages that end in divorce don't last that long.

Everyone knew the currents were blowing to a four-team field, and believed that a four-team field for three years -- and with a $500 million per year TV price --would allow the big wigs to see the big checks that were out there. Then the escalation to eight teams and a $1 billion -- yes, billion with a B -- deal would be there for the taking.

Big Ten commissioner/apologist Jim Delany told reporters this was "the best new property to come on to the sports marketplace maybe in our lifetime."

He's right, and it's still only half as good as what could have been.

More from Delany of the playoff: "There will be a period of time of celebration. We were probably the last defenders of the BCS, and we'll be the first defenders of this. We'll be the last off the wagon on it too. We won't be calling for eight. We'll be defending four."

Of course you were Jim because you are the puppets of the powerful. And if you don't believe so, how can you justify being defensive of your plan on the first day of the "time of celebration?"

The four-team playoff is better than the BCS. It's just not as good as the best sport in the country deserves. And sadly, it appears it will be 12 years before it can be fixed.

EU deal for Spain, Italy buoys markets but details sketchy

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Under pressure to prevent a catastrophic breakup of their single currency, euro zone leaders agreed on Friday to let their rescue fund inject aid directly into stricken banks from next year and intervene on bond markets to support troubled member states.

They also pledged to create a single banking supervisor for euro zone banks based around the European Central Bank in a landmark first step towards a European banking union that could help shore up struggling member Spain.

"It is a first step to break the vicious circle between banks and sovereigns," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told a final news conference after talks which stretched right through the night.

The deal was widely seen as a political victory for embattled Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his Spanish counterpart, Mariano Rajoy, over German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had brushed aside any need for such emergency measures earlier this week.

ECB President Mario Draghi endorsed the "tangible results", which sent the euro nearly 2 percent higher and sharply cut Spanish and Italian bond yields. European shares rose, led by banking stocks buoyed by the prospect of moves to backstop the financial system.

"I am actually quite pleased with the outcome of the European Council. It showed the long-term commitment to the euro by all member states of the euro area," Draghi told reporters.

Market participants welcomed the outcome as a substantial step to restore confidence in the 17-nation euro zone, which was saluted by a more durable rally than previous summit outcomes.

"It's inching closer to a banking union, and the closer we get to a banking union would put (the EU) well on the road to a fiscal union," said Art Hogan, managing director of Lazard Capital Markets in New York.

Most economists polled by Reuters expect the ECB to cut borrowing costs at its July 5 meeting, which takes place against a darkening economic backdrop. But internal resistance to the central bank reviving its bond-buying program remains high.

After 14 hours of tense talks that ended at 4:30 a.m. (0230 GMT), the 17 leaders agreed on a series of short-term steps to shore up their monetary union and bring down the borrowing costs of Spain and Italy, seen as too big to bail out.

To that end the euro zone's temporary EFSF and permanent ESM rescue funds will be used "in a flexible and efficient manner in order to stabilize markets" to support countries that comply with EU budget policy recommendations, a joint statement said.

It gave few specifics, but euro zone officials said the funds could buy bonds on both the primary and secondary markets on the basis of a memorandum of understanding signed with the requesting state and up to a funding limit to be agreed.

Both Italy and Spain said they did not intend to call on that mechanism to stabilize markets for now, hoping the Brussels agreement will serve as a sufficient deterrent.

Washington said it was encouraged by the progress but White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters travelling with President Barack Obama that "a lot of details" still needed to be worked out, and the euro zone was likely to need to take further steps in the future.

The International Monetary Fund said the summit had taken "the right steps toward completing monetary union" while ratings agency Fitch said the deal eased near-term pressure on euro zone sovereign ratings.

UNTHINKABLE DECISIONS

In a key concession by EU paymaster Germany, the leaders agreed to waive the ESM's preferred creditor status on lending for Spanish banks, removing a key deterrent to investors buying Spanish government bonds, who feared having to take the first losses in any debt restructuring.

"We have taken decisions that were unthinkable just some months ago," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

Despite the concessions by Berlin allowing euro zone rescue funds to be used more flexibly, questions remained about the terms, size and supervision of any future aid for Spain and Italy.

There was also no commitment for now to back up a European bank supervisor with a joint deposit guarantee or a common resolution fund, to avert capital flight and taxpayer losses. However, one EU official said that letting the ESM lend directly to banks once the supervisory body is up and running was a backdoor route to closer fiscal union.

Monti, determined to avoid the political stigma of the bailout terms imposed on Greece, Ireland and Portugal, said countries that complied with EU budget recommendations would not face extra austerity conditions or be subject to intrusive inspections by a "troika" of international lenders.

Eager to avoid the impression that she had blinked first, Merkel said strict conditionality would still apply to the use of rescue funds and countries would face stringent monitoring by the EU Commission and the ECB.

Asked if she had yielded to pressure, she said: "There is clearly pressure from financial markets. Some countries are in a difficult situation. The high interest rates affect the debt but also the real economy. We had an interest in finding solutions."

Merkel reaffirmed her firm opposition to common euro zone bonds.

She later won resounding approval in the lower house of the parliament in Berlin for funding the ESM and for new EU budget rules. A similar vote in the upper house was expected later in the day, though Germany's constitutional court may still object.

The Spanish and Italian leaders had threatened to block a package of measures to promote growth to pressure Merkel to accept measures to ease their borrowing costs, delaying the talks. New French President Francois Hollande backed their calls for bold steps to help the bloc's third and fourth biggest economies, adding to the pressure on Merkel.

Hollande, who had demanded a renegotiation of the fiscal pact to switch Europe's focus from austerity to promoting growth, said he had achieved satisfaction at the summit and would now submit the treaty to parliament for ratification.

While Hollande could claim a step forward in "solidarity", Merkel achieved little immediate progress on her demands for EU authorities to be given the power to override national budgets and economic policies. The issue was kicked down the road to October, when top EU officials led by Van Rompuy will deliver a more detailed report.

CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM

Economists applauded both the short-term measures to steady markets and the longer-term direction, saying that for once, after 20 summits since the crisis began in early 2010, euro zone leaders had exceeded admittedly low expectations.

"I think the ECB being made the banking supervisor is actually the biggest long-term step because it points the way to banking union," said Megan Greene, analyst at Roubini Global Economics, which is often gloomy about the euro zone's future.

"The move to recapitalize banks directly is a big deal and will help to break the ?vicious circle' between banks and sovereigns that has been at the very heart of this crisis," said ABN AMRO economist Nick Kounis, although he added that the euro zone remained "in a muddling-through scenario".

The ESM's ability to inject capital directly into banks will come too late to help Spain recapitalize its debt-laden lenders immediately this year, but it should allow Madrid to remove the cleanup from state books next year, euro zone officials said.

Merkel said finance ministers would have to work out whether the state or the banks would be legally responsible for repayment of the loans thereafter.

Some analysts were more skeptical about the benefits of the deal, given the level of detail left open.

Ireland, which had to take an EU/IMF bailout in 2010 after suffering a similar bank meltdown and property bust to Spain, hailed the decisions as a "game changer", saying it would seek similarly favorable conditions for its own taxpayers.

The Serotonin-Plus Weight Loss Program: Roots | SP Diet Plan

Posted on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 11:07am?-?0 Comments ?

I was in New York yesterday meeting some physicians and practices interested in bringing the SP Program into their facilities. ?At lunchtime, we passed a real New York City pizza place, and as I grew up in Nuuu Yooork, you know exactly what I wanted for lunch. ?The term in New York is ?Lets get a slice?, and the slice obviously refers to a slice of pizza. ?That term is ?not used in our area. ?As I was chowing down on my lunch, and telling my really fun business associates not to take a video of the weight loss Doctor eating pizza and then posting it on You Tube. I started thinking more about how all of us grew up and the types of foods we were all exposed to. ?For my southern patients, I have heard that fried foods were abundant. ?For my Italian patients, I am told that pasta dishes were the most prominent. ?Pretty much every ethnic/regional group will have food (or drink) sources indigenous to that area or culture. ?To some extent, these ?roots? carry through to our adult years regardless of where we relocate to. ?And when we do go back ?home?, we will often revert back to the old homegrown eating habits, and strongly encouraged by our family members and/or friends that still live there. ?During your weight loss journey, try to be cognizant of these ?roots? issues and identify the foods that need to be avoided or minimized. ?(By the way, the ?slice? tasted great).

(AP) ? The Supreme Court's decision Thursday to uphold President Barack Obama's historic overhaul is expected to be a boon to most of the health care industry by making coverage more affordable for millions of uninsured Americans.

The ruling could give the biggest boost to hospitals and health insurers, but drugmakers and biotech companies also will get additional customers because the law requires nearly everyone to have health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. That's expected to bring coverage to about 30 million more Americans.

But medical device makers will be hit with a tax on sales as a result of the law, and experts disagree on whether those companies will see much of a jump in business in a couple years.

Overall, the ruling could boost health care stocks both by increasing access to and use of health care and by ending months of uncertainty and speculation. Shares jumped on Thursday for hospitals, but fell slightly for drug makers and most insurers.

Here's the potential impact to each major sector in the health care industry:

DRUGMAKERS

The ruling's effect on drugmaker stocks was muted Thursday.

Les Funtleyder, health care fund manager at Poliwogg, a private equity fund for small investors, said that's because the ruling keeps the status quo for those companies.

He noted the law ? which the industry strongly supported ? didn't carry significant reductions in what government programs pay for medicines. That's a big positive given that drug prices are much higher in the U.S. than other countries and are a perennial target of industry critics and anyone looking for places to cut medical costs.

Biotech and traditional drugmakers likewise already are absorbing the negative parts of the health care law: fees based on their share of the prescription drug market, discounts to seniors on Medicare who have hit the "doughnut hole" coverage gap and much-higher rebates to the government on drugs bought through Medicaid.

All those costs from the overhaul are reflected in drugmakers' share prices and financial forecasts, said UBS drug analyst Matthew Roden.

He said the companies likely will get a boost in drug revenue from new patients starting in 2014, but not a huge one. That's because patients needing the most expensive drugs, for cancer and rare disorders, aren't going without now ? generally are getting them through government or industry patient assistance programs.

Roden thinks investors who shifted into safe-haven stocks such as pharmaceuticals recently on Thursday decided to jump over to hospitals, which appear to have fared best under the ruling.

HOSPITALS

Hospitals perhaps could have the most to gain from the law.

"Hospitals may be the biggest beneficiary because their biggest problem is people without insurance," said analyst Les Funtleyder, health care fund manager at Poliwogg, a private equity fund for small investors.

Indeed, the 30 million or more people expected to gain health insurance in 2014 will reduce the number of uninsured patients showing up at hospitals needing urgent care, often for conditions that could have been treated much more cheaply early on.

Such charity care has been a big drag on hospitals, and those costs should drop sharply. Federal payments to hospitals to offset some charity care costs will be reduced as more people are insured, said UBS health care services analyst A.J. Rice.

More importantly, he expects those newly insured folks to seek more tests and nonemergency treatments at hospitals, including for chronic health conditions such as diabetes, boosting hospital patient volume. But there are tradeoffs, as hospitals will get smaller annual increases in Medicare payment rates.

"There's a lot of variables to be worked out," Rice said, but "the net effect should be positive" for hospitals.

INSURERS

Insurers will get millions of new customers thanks to tax credits that will help middle class people pay for coverage on the individual market, and the state-federal Medicaid program will still expand. Additionally, the requirement that nearly every American have insurance will compel more people to buy coverage.

But insurers will also face hefty fees and restrictions because of the law. The health insurance sector will pay annual fees starting in 2014. They total $8 billion that first year and then climb in subsequent years.

The law also restricts how much insurers can vary their pricing based on things like age and it will require them to cover everyone who applies starting in 2014. The law also requires insurers to spend a minimum percentage of the premiums they collect on care and quality improvements or pay rebates to some of its customers.

Citi analyst Carl McDonald said insurers also face considerable risks that they will get mostly sick people signing up for coverage in the online health insurance exchanges that begin in a couple years. The exchanges are like online marketplaces where people can shop for coverage much like they do for airline tickets on travel web sites.

He noted the mandate that requires people to purchase coverage will lead to only a $95 tax penalty at least initially. The analyst said that won't be strong enough to persuade young healthy people to sign up for coverage.

The overhaul requires insurers to cover all who apply for insurance starting in 2014, which means they won't be able to deny coverage to someone with a pre-existing condition like diabetes. Insurers have said that for this to happen, they will need a balance of healthy customers to counter people who produce more in claims than they pay in premiums.

MEDICAL DEVICE MAKERS

For medical device makers, the bad news is that the tax on devices stays. Medical device makers will have to start paying a 2.3 percent tax beginning in January on their sales of devices such as pacemakers and CT scan machines imposed under the overhaul law. But they could more customers.

Funtleyder, the health care fund manager, said it was all negative, because he doesn't foresee a big jump in device sales resulting from the ruling: "People who need a pacemaker already were getting one."

But Leerink Swann analyst Richard Newitter wrote that he expects more doctor visits and hospital procedures to increase sales of devices.

One trade group for the industry, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association, said that Congress and the president must repeal the tax, arguing it would make it harder for companies to develop innovative new devices.

"It is clear that this misguided policy has already led to job losses and cuts to research and development," Mark Leahey, the group's president, said in a statement.

If you have never had to call a pest control agency, you may not be entirely familiar with the many helpful services they can provide. Pest Control in Rochester is an important topic that everyone should have some basic familiarity with. This is because an infestation of pests can actually affect anyone. No matter how clean you keep your home or how well-maintained your property is, it is entirely possible to end up with ants, rats, mice, fleas, flies, and wasps invading your space and causing all kinds of damage. No one wants this to happen to them, so you probably already do quite a bit to prevent an infestation from taking place. However, if despite your best efforts at prevention, you still find your home becoming a home for pests as well, then you need to call a nearby pest control agency.

A business providing extermination services and Pest Control in Rochester can actually do many things for their clients. They can provide initial consultations to tell you if your home or commercial property has any potential trouble spots that you should keep a close eye on. These trouble spots may be located in the basement, in crawl spaces, in the attic, or under the eaves of the roof. These spaces often have tiny holes that are barely noticeable to the untrained eye, but a pest control agent can spot these correctly as an entry point for insects and small rodents. Once inside, these pests can build nests that grow to considerable size and it doesn't take long for this to happen.

If you ever notice an unusual number of insects hanging around your property, this might be an indication that there's a problem that needs taken care of as soon as possible. You don't want to let too much time go by because some pests can reproduce at an alarming rate. Mammals such as rats and mice give birth to litters in rapid succession, though a swarm of insects can multiply exponentially in just a few days. Before you know it, there is an army of ants devouring your food in the kitchen and a swarm of wasps coming after your children! Mosquitoes too are a serious insect threat. Any standing water is a potential mosquito breeding ground. Wading pools, birdbaths, buckets, rain barrels, and other common forms of standing water might quickly turn into a serious mosquito problem.

Pest Control in Rochester is an important consideration for anyone living or working in the area. Everyone has to do their part to manage the insect and rodent population, so if you notice a problem, simply call a pest control service. They'll be happy to solve this serious problem.

Greg Sargent: Dems can put GOP on defensive over Obamacare?s specifics

It?s been widely accepted by commentators that the Supreme Court decision may give Republicans a weapon against Dems in the campaign. But can Dems put Republicans on defense by stressing the specific provisions within Obamacare that Republicans would take away from people by repealing the law in full?

North Dakota Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp recently earned national attention when she released an ad defending Obamacare and calling out her GOP opponent for supporting repeal. Heitkamp hit GOP Rep. Rick Berg for voting to take away specific provisions such as the ban on discrimination against people with preexisting conditions.

Berg?s response to the SCOTUS decision yesterday was very interesting: He?s claiming he supports individual provisions in the law. A North Dakota reporter asked the Berg campaign about the ruling:

Berg?s congressional spokesman Chris Pack said Berg would favor ?fiscally-sustainable bipartisan health care reform that occurs in an open process to protect our most vulnerable residents.?
?We need bipartisan health care reform that contains a frontier states provision, closes the donut hole, and doesn?t deny coverage for pre-existing conditions,? Pack said.

Berg voted to repeal Obamacare and has been a consistent supporter of junking the law. But that would do away with the very provisions he says we need: closing the Medicare ?donut hole? and banning discrimination against those with preexisting conditions.

The point here is that we?re now seeing a discussion of the law?s specifics. And when that happens, it?s harder for Republicans to support repealing them.

Republicans won the battle to define the overall law in the public mind. It remains unpopular. But the SCOTUS decision means we?re entering into a new phase of this debate. Opponents of the law can no longer convincingly characterize it as an abuse of power that should be repealed mainly on that basis alone. The claim that the law trampled the constitution was all about casting the overall law as indefensible from a process standpoint ? all about taking the debate out of the realm of specifics. That argument is no longer tenable.

Now the debate will be about ... the health care reforms Dems are championing. As Jonathan Cohn put it: ?all that?s left is the actual health care plan ? and what it would do for people.? Now the argument will be about what repealing it would actually mean to people, and what they?d lose, and what Republicans would do instead, if anything. It will be a challenging argument, particularly since major provisions don?t kick in until 2014 and people don?t have a direct stake in them yet. But it?s one Dems shouldn?t shrink from engaging.

*****************************************

UPDATE: The DSCC responds:

?Rick Berg has voted dozens of times to allow insurance companies to discriminate against North Dakotans with pre-existing conditions, young people, pregnant women and cancer patients. Rick Berg even voted to force seniors to pay hundreds more for prescription drug coverage and even voted for a partisan budget that would end the Medicare guarantee for North Dakota seniors. Now, Rick Berg is trying to make North Dakotans forget that he wants to allow insurance companies to discriminate against North Dakotans and cover up his long record. ?

Social Gaming attracts attention of UK Gambling Commission

  • Social | 29th June, 2012 | London, UK | UK Gambling Commission ? Website
  • The rapid growth of social media gaming has attracted the attention of the UK?s Gambling Commission for the first time, announce Belle Rock Entertainment. The Commission is keen to explore the growth of social gaming, and the increasingly blurred line between what constitutes social gaming and gambling.

Social NetworkingSocial Media is now an integral part of modern life. As well as an important tool for businesses and marketing, millions of users participate in social media games for fun every day. Games like the runaway Facebook hit Farmville now boast more than 400 million active users worldwide, and online gambling operators are now seeking to make inroads into the social gaming sector.

Operators traditionally associated with online casino sites, including Europe?s largest operator, Bwin.Party, as well as leading casino software developer Playtech, have expressed an interest in expanding into the social media arena.

Conversely, leading lights of social gaming, Zynga, who created Farmville and Cityville, are looking to expand into the gambling sector. Zynga recently appointed two lobbyists to their ranks, Justin McCarthy and Jeffrey Peck, known for their support of the legalisation and regulation of online casino gaming in the United States.

The social media platforms themselves are also keen to provide both online gambling products and paid-for social media games on their sites. Facebook is already home to a swathe of social gaming apps that allow players to progress more quickly by paying for credits and points, as well as casino game apps that offer casino games for free.

Reports that virtual money can now be traded for real cash illegally has now attracted the attention of the UK Gambling Commission, which is especially concerned with the lack of regulation that allows youngsters to participate. They plan to examine the effects of social media gaming, as well as deciding whether or not social gaming, or certain aspects of it, can be defined as gambling. From there, they will have to ascertain the impact this may have on gambling licensing in the future.

    Clock Town Saga: Chained Gods

*This is a mostly the same, partial revamp of an idea I had some time ago, though no one seemed interested at the time. Thought I would give it another shot. I have since added some lore material, a fleshed out a little more on how the plot could possibly go.*

So, pending random thoughts before sleep. I suddenly came to the conclusion that a RP based on one of my favorite games and most fondest memories as a child would somehow be a good idea.

You: "Ohhh I also have fond memories associated with that game! I think that an RP based of off it could be quite fun! Max, what do you have in mind?!"

Well, the short answer to that question my excited friend is slightly disappointing. The truth is that while I have many ideas floating around my head, I just don't seem to know how to exactly make them fit together.

You: "I think I know where you are going with this.......you want my help."

Ahh! You figured it out so quickly! Well, sort of.

    -----

Ok here's what I have come up with so far.

Title: Clock Town Saga: Chained Gods

Setting: It will take place in Termina (duh Max), in some sort of "generations after the events of the game/possibly a alternate reality" (or both).

RP Lore: A long time ago in a great demon was set free of its immortal coil by a good hearted traveler. The traveler made a mask out of the demon?s remains to hold the power that was released at its death. Later that same mask fell into the hands of an ancient tribe where it was used to perform hexing rituals on their enemies. Though with through this use the mask began to grow in power and even develop a will of its own. Eventually the mask?s power grew so much that even the gods of the ancient tribe?s realm began to fear it. So they cast it from their world and into the shadow.

Still that was not enough to stop the mask, as power is always alluring. A traveler heard stories of the mask, and sought it out for its novelty. Then he found it, just like many other trinkets before. Though he himself could resist the urge to use such a dark and powerful item, it was only a matter of time it fell into the hands of one less equipped to handle it. In this case, that of a lonely and betrayed soul.

Feeding of the loneliness and betrayal, the mask sought to do what it did best. Curse, hex, and destroy all around it, starting with those who its owner most hated. Though by some luck, a great hero from another land was drawn into the conflict. Though out of place, the hero was helped by the traveler who had drawn the mask back from the darkness and by the strength of his childhood friends. With this help, he was given a fighting chance against the mask. Though in the end, the mask brought about its own undoing.

Just before the hero?s final confrontation, did a strange thing. It gave the hero a Fierce sleeping power it had encountered in the shadow. One perhaps even darker than the mask itself, a power that had wholly destroyed its land of origin. Then when it was all alone, it had retreated into the darkness to slumber.

The will of the great hero awoke to sleeping power and the two dark forces did battle with one another until finally the dark hexing mask was defeated by the Fierce and powerful rage. Only through the hero?s force of will was he then able to send the Fierce power back into its slumber. Finally as the hero had promised, he brought the dark hexing mask back to the traveler, as well as entrusting him with the Fierce sleeping power. This is were the story is said to end, the land saved, the hero and the traveler departed. However, that was not the end.

In truth, the traveler realized that the power of the dark mask was only temporarily sapped and would one day regenerate. Still, he could not bring himself to destroy it. So he sealed its power throughout the land it had threatened, hoping that would be enough to keep the power eternally chained. The Fierce power, without the will of a hero or the threat of a worthy adversary, continued to sleep. The traveler then resumed his namesake, and the tale was forgotten to history. However, though its power had been sealed, the will of the mask remained.

Plot: After the events of the game (or whatever we decide happened in the alternate reality past), the power of Majora's Mask was sealed away in some way or another. (probably separately, in different far flung ruins thought Termina) However, the mask remained along with it's unbreakable connection to the now chained power that once resided within it.

Later, another skull kid stumbles upon it in the lost woods. He thinks it is beautiful and begins to wear it. Then one night, he has a dream about leaving the forest. He suddenly finds himself drawn through the forest, eventually passing through a portal into the Clock Tower.

Meanwhile, the carnival of time is in full swing as many people gather in Clock Town. At the Stroke of midnight(which also happens to be when the skull kid passes through the portal, the festivities explode as fireworks go off and everyone ramps up their celebration. Each one of those at the festival is wearing a multitude of different masks, as tradition dictates.

The skull kid wanders into the ongoing festivities and is mistaken for just another child wearing a mask. That night he makes friends among some of the children that are running around the town for the festival. They have an amazing night. However, during the night they realize something. Their masks have suddenly been endowed with special powers. All Except for the strange kid that no one seems to know personally. Which ends up making the night all the more fun for them.

It turns out the reason that the De-powered Majora's Mask is what is giving the children's mask their powers. Which they somewhat figure out because their powers don't seem to work when they are far away from the new kid.

    ***

Ok this is mostly where I hit a wall. I have a vague idea of the children using their new mask related powers to go on adventures around Termina, but I don?t have a super concrete way to go about it. I?m thinking something along the lines of one of the children invites the others to spend a few days after the festival at their home, Romani ranch, where they end up wandering into the woods to find ruins where part of Majora?s power is sealed and move one from there. Also, somewhere along the lines I would like to work in the Fierce Deity mask, whether it be one of the children?s masks or they find it.

Though ultimately I am sure of nothing and open to any ideas people interested have about what direction we want to take the plot in.

What I do know is that I want to keep it in what I think is the spirit of the game. A sort of surreal childhood adventure with actual very serious undertones. To the children (did I mention that most of the characters should be children?), they are just having fun on an adventure! But in reality it is very dangerous and very serious. Though they are able to handle the dangers by using the powers of their masks.

+++++What I want from potential roleplayers++++++: Hurm, while I haven't any thing set in concrete so far, here are some ideas. I'm kinda thinking that a daily posting schedule would be amazing. However, I would most likely air on the side of flexibility. Separately, I think it might also be cool to set up some specific times for a kind of real time RP interaction if people would be up for it. (in the chat perhaps? Though I would have to do some research on how to get that going)

As far as post length goes, I'm thinking a minimum of a few paragraphs per post since the time line would be daily to daily+ posting. Though yet again, I'm a flexible person and would probably tolerate a one paragraph every once and a while. As far as grammar and spelling goes, as long as you are trying and you get your point across, you're fine. Though I would like posts to be in third person and be devoid of 1337 spk. Beyond that, I'm confident everyone will do fine. I myself can never seem to quite figured out how to space and structure paragraphs correctly, so the theme here is leniency.

Something else that ties into post length and timing would be group sizes. If there are 5 different RP'ers interacting, I would probably expect to have a daily(+) schedule and 3-5(+) paragraphs each. But if it just two people interacting, multiple posts per day and shorter posts would be quite acceptable. What I want to do is give people freedom, but also a chance to not be left behind. Basically, posting order based on proximity and interaction. If that makes sense.

The number of role-players I would allow would be part of the proximity and interaction rule. I'm thinking that no "questing group" (a group that mainly interacts with each other) would be over 5-6. Just for the ease of "everyone gets to post" but not "holy crap thers 8 people I have to wait on before I can post!". So if I would allow more than 4-6 other characters than the one I am playing, there would be two groups of children mostly doing different things. (Yet again, I hope that makes sense)

One last note on potential RP-ers. While we will most likely be playing as children in the rp, I would like to have mature RP'ers. The feeling of the "surreal childhood adventure with dark undertones", I feel would be most appreciated by an older and more mature audience. It's akin to the game in a way. When I was a kid, it was just an exciting game where I was on and adventure (though there were a few scary moments). However, when I look back on it now being of a more mature age, I begin to see how strange and dark it was. If any one has seen "Pan's Labyrinth", think somewhat in that spirit but a little toned down. Also, go and watch some "Courage the Cowardly Dog". Which was a show I enjoyed as a kid, but now as a young adult I see it "through a different lens" and perhaps enjoy it even more. So, while I'm not gonna say you have to be 18+, I am gonna say mature mentality is a must. I know that's not the best description of what I want, but play it by ear the best you can.

++++++++Characters:++++++++++ Ah, yes, who will we be playing you ask? Well, I'm thinking children. Kinda 9-14 age children. The same age as link during the game (I think?). I don't know if I will allow other races beyond the "human" ones (ie. Gorons, Zora, Deku Scrub...) but I probably will. I may allow old people as characters, but I honestly don't know how they might fit into MC roles in the plot. It's the children that will be driving the storyline. Feel free to make them "ancestral archetypes" based on characters of the game, or just full blown OC's.

    Specific Character roles-

    *non-optional*

The Skull Kid with Majora's Mask: Specifically I will be playing the skull kid (Of which I plan for there only to be one [If you can convince me with an amazing argument I may be persuaded to allow one more])

The Ringleader: I would like to have one character be the ?Leader? of the group of children. They would have traits like bravery, leadership, and a just mind while also being curious and inquisitive. Basically the one who sets up adventures and takes it upon themselves to have a good time by organizing other people to do fun things. It would be good if this person developed a good friendship with the skull kid, or at the very least found him intriguing enough to want him to be part of the group. I?m thinking it would be cool for this person would end up with the Fierce deity mask. I think this char would go great as overlapping with the Romani child idea, but they in no way have to be tied together. (Also as a side not, I might require this person to be a little more involved in the structuring of the plot, because their character would be a driving force. So If you want this role, PM me about it, because I might request you to be a co-gm.)

    *optional char ideas*

Child/Children of Romani Ranch - Important if the Romani ranch visit invitation is going to be a thing.

Keaton Mask Kid - For some reason this mask screams cunning to me?

    -----

Ok, that's the end of the stuff that I feel confident enough about to put down in text. Any more will be based on if people are interested and they ideas that come from you or me as a part of it.

    That's all folks!

    Last Note

As far as being a GM, I am a green-as-grass nooobie. Though, I would describe myself as mostly pacifistic and quite patient. So, I don't think I'll be too terrible at it..... Which reminds me, If anybody expresses a want to help me by Co-GMing go ahead and send me a PM and we can talk about it! It would defiantly help alleviate some of my fears of failure. Plus, you might be in a better position to influence the plot and Ideas of the RP.

Photosynthesis re-wired: Chemists use nanowires to power photosynthesis

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Harnessing the power of the sun has inspired scientists and engineers to look for ways to turn sunlight into clean energy to heat houses, fuel factories and power devices. While a majority of this research focuses on energy production, some researchers are looking at the potential uses of these novel solar technologies in other areas.

Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dunwei Wang's work with silicon nanowires and his related construct, Nanonets, has shown these stable, tiny wire-like structures can be used in processes ranging from energy collection to hydrogen-generating water-splitting.

Teaming up with fellow Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kian L. Tan, the researchers have taken aim at a role for nanowires in photosynthesis.

Their work has produced a process that closely resembles photosynthesis, employing silicon nanowires to collect light energy to power reactions capable of synthesizing the basic compounds of two popular pain-killing, anti-inflammatory drugs, they report in the current edition of Angewandte Chemie, the journal of the German Chemical Society.

The reaction sequence offers an approach that differs from earlier attempts to sequester carbon dioxide with sunlight and solves the vexing problem of carbon's low selectivity, which so far has limited earlier methods to the production of fuels. Tan and Wang report their process offers the selectivity required to produce complex organic intermediaries capable of developing pharmaceuticals and high-value chemicals.

The process succeeds in taming stubborn carbon, which structurally resists most efforts to harness it for a single chemical product. Typically, refined forms of carbon molecules must first be produced to produce the necessary results.

"If we can start to use carbon dioxide and light to power reactions in organic chemistry, there's a huge benefit to that. It allows you to bypass the middle man of fossil fuels by using light to drive the chemical reaction," said Tan. "The key is the interaction of two fields -- materials and synthetic chemistry. Separately, these fields may not have accomplished this on their own. But together, we combined our knowledge to make it work."

During photosynthesis, plants capture sunlight and use this solar energy and carbon dioxide to fuel chemical reactions.

Tan and Wang used silicon nanowires as a photocathode, exploiting the wire's efficient means of converting solar energy to electrical energy. Electrons released from the atoms in the nanowires are then transferred to organic molecules to trigger chemical reactions.

In this case, the researchers used aromatic ketones, which when struck by electrons become active and attack and bind carbon dioxide. Further steps produced an acid that allowed the team to create the precursors to ibuprofen and naproxen with high selectivity and high yield, the team reports.

Tan and Wang were joined in the research by Research Assistant Guangbi Yuan, PhD '12, graduate student Rui Liu, doctoral student Candice L. Joe, and former doctoral student Thomas E. Lightburn, PhD '11.

Tan said it is no accident that the process so closely resembles natural photosynthesis, as chemists are constantly drawing inspiration from nature in their work.

"Researchers in my field are always drawing inspiration from nature," said Tan. "You take the basic lessons and you try to do it in an artificial way. In this work, we're trying to learn lessons from nature, although we can't copy nature directly."

Cutting through all the distractions at work

Some of us get pushed off balance by the slightest interruptions at work, while others easily tune out distractions. The truth is, nobody is completely attentive to their work 100 percent of the time ? and we can all use some guidance on ways to ignore disruptions in the office.

We turned to career experts Phyllis Mufson, Andy Teach and Meredith Haberfeld to find out what to do.

?At work, just as in life, distractions are par for the course. The key point is how well you manage them,? saidHaberfeld, an executive coach, and co-founder of the Institute for Coaching.

Forbes.com: 8 tips For boosting productivity at work this summer

Teach, a corporate veteran and author of From Graduation to Corporation: The Practical Guide to Climbing the Corporate Ladder One Rung at a Time, agreed: ?All workers have trouble with distractions in the workplace to some degree. The key is to limit those distractions as much as possible.? However, Teach believes occasional workplace distractions can actually be a good thing. ?We?d all get burnt out pretty quickly if we didn?t get distracted from time to time and take our minds off of work. The danger, however, is when distractions take up too much of our time and prevent us from getting our work done,? he said.

If those interruptions in the office are not managed, they can seriously erode your ability to focus and may lead to factual mistakes and poor judgment, which can lead to poor performance, said Mufson, a Sarasota-based career coach.

Frequent distractions can also negatively affect your mood, Teach said. Why? They can prevent you from getting your work done on time, which creates more stress for you and consequently makes you more frustrated and unhappy at work.

Forbes.com: 10 ways to kick fatigue and boost your energy

Mufson added: ?Happiness largely comes from feeling that you are doing a good job at work that has meaning to you and seeing positive results from your efforts. It takes skill and focus to produce high-quality work at the top of your game. Distractions can decrease focus, which increases stress, which can intensify any poor work habit you may have. Distractions can acerbate all of the issues that lead to poor performance, creating a negative spiral where poor performance leads to more stress which leads to more poor performance, and so on.?

Forbes.com slideshow: How to handle 10 common workplace distractions

Distractions range from external annoyances like loud phone talkers in open cube space to self-distractions such as Facebook, personal email or surfing the Web, Haberfeld said. ?Moreover, work-style habits can cause real distraction and are often masked as ?unavoidable work issues,? like spending your day checking and answering email or prioritizing your day based on whatever comes across your desk, keeping you from getting much of your other work done.?

Though the frequency and nature of distractions depends on your line of work, office setup, workplace culture and the size of your company, among other things, there are a number of common workplace disruptions that many of us endure. Those include: unceasing email (personal and work), text messages, social media and other websites not related to work, personal calls, co-worker or client interruptions, last-minute requests, unscheduled meetings, audible distractions (i.e., music, television, email alerts, IM?s, phones ringing, other people?s phone conversations, noisy copy machines or printers, people or vehicles going by outside your window, elevator doors or restroom doors opening and closing, etc.), gossiping co-workers, and micromanaging supervisors.

Forbes.com: Time management secrets anyone can use

If you regularly lose focus at work because of one or more of these distractions, there are a few things you can do:

    Manage your time and space
?Reserve regular blocks of time for work that requires concentration,? Mufson said. ?Try using the first hour at work to make headway in your most difficult project. Ask your co-workers for quiet time, and if that is not possible, take your work into a conference room or other quiet space,? she suggested.

    Limit technology interruptions
Spending a few minutes each day checking personal email, handling an online bank transfer or texting is not a problem, but doing any of these in excess will distract you from your work, Haberfeld said. ?Turn off email and text alerts and, if your role allows, only check your messages two to three times a day. Reserve your personal calls and errands for the lunch hour,? Mufson added.

Forbes.com: 10 worst body language mistakes

    Organize your workspace
Have a tray for incoming work and keep only the project you are working on now in front of you, Mufson suggested. If your workspace tends to the chaotic, it may be a sign that you are a visual organizer and the common organizing tips won?t work for you.

    Learn self-management
Learning self-management skills will help you increase your focus and reduce stress, Mufson said. ?Peoples? work styles are different. Some of us are naturally more distractible, or more social, or more physically restless. Rather than beating yourself up for your lack of focus, experiment to learn what works for you.?

    Make a plan
Haberfeld advises picking your top two distractions and giving two weeks' attention to keeping them high on your radar and resolving them. ?Create a strategy and keep honing it as you see what works and what doesn?t.?

    And share it
If you are prone to self-distraction, ask a friend at work to have a designated check-in time each week to go over your progress,? Haberfeld said. Letting others know about your strategy to minimize distractions will help you stay focused.

Forbes.com: 10 ways to be more confident at work

    Take action
If your day is riddled with people walking over to meet with you at their convenience, Haberfeld said, get the friendly word out that you?re setting up designated office hours for walk-ins.

    Take care
It's also important to take care of your health. That begins with getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep makes you tired, irritable and erodes your ability to focus, Mufson said. ?Drink water and stay hydrated. Being even a little dehydrated will make you feel tired and sluggish ? and possibly more susceptible to distractions.

    Take it easy
Take time at the end of the day to reflect on your day and what you want to focus on tomorrow. Write your priorities for the next day and review your list when you come in.

New Home Sales Rise To 2-Year High | Peter Dellane Mortgage Blog

New Home Supply The new construction market continues to improve.

As reported by the Census Bureau, 369,000 new homes were sold last month on a seasonally-adjusted, annualized basis.?A ?new home? is a home that is considered new construction.

May?s data marks the highest number of new homes sold since April 2010, the last month of that year?s federal home buyer tax credit.

    It?s also?a 14% increase over the rolling 12-month average.

The news was somewhat expected based on the most recent?Homebuilder Confidence survey,?which rose to a 5-year high. Home builders have been reporting higher sales volume and rising buyer foot traffic since October of last year.?

The May New Home Sales report confirms what builders already told us.

Furthermore, new homes are selling more quickly than builders have built them, lowering the national ?home supply? to levels not seen since October 2005.?There are currently 145,000 new homes for sale.

A supply of 6.0 months is believed to represent a market in balance.?Anything less connotes a ?sellers? market?. At the current pace of sales, the entire new home housing stock would be exhausted in 4.7 months.

The South Region continues to account for the majority of new construction sales, posting a 55% market share in May. South Region sales were up 13 percent as compared to April. The other 3 regions turned in mixed results :

    • Northeast Region : +36.7% from April 2012
    • Midwest Region : -10.6% from April 2012
    • West Region : -3.5% from April 2012

For all its strength, though, the Census Bureau?s New Home Sales data may also be ?off?.

Although New Home Sales were said to rise by roughly 8 percent nationally from April to May, the government?s monthly report was also footnoted with a ?12.2% margin of error. This means that the actual New Home Sales reading may have been as high as +20% last month, or as low as -4%. The values could be positive or negative ? we can?t know for certain.

However, that?s not to say that the New Home Sales should be ignored.

Longer-term, new home trends have been positive and builder confidence survey suggests the same. ?If you?re in the market for new construction , you may want to go into contract soon. Home prices and mortgage rates remain low ? a terrific combination for today?s home buyers.
