Position Title: Director of Communications

Department: Communications

Reports To: Vice President for Advancement and Communications

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Position Summary: The Director of Communications is primarily responsible for strategically disseminating the message, goals and initiatives of Asbury Theological Seminary. He/She is to develop the marketing and promotion strategies of the Seminary as well as proper public and media relation representation. The Director is also responsible for overseeing the essential details of production management for all Seminary printing projects and publications and supervising all departmental staff.

Essential Functions:

? Develops processes, collaborates with various departments and implements communication and marketing strategies Seminary-wide

? Creates and distributes communications to internal and external Seminary audiences

? Manages the maintenance of the Seminary-wide calendar

? Proposes, manages and updates policies that relate to the communications office

? Evaluates the public relations, marketing, and publications programs

? Directs all media relations and develops consistent messaging on behalf of the seminary to be presented in media related situations

? Advises Vice President for Advancement and Communications on media/public relation situations and internal communications

? Develops relationships with media vendors to promote Seminary

? Selects and directs free-lance writers, graph designers and photographers

? Collaborates with departments and advises on the promotion and marketing of Seminary-wide special events

? Works within guidelines established by Vice President for Advancement and Communications to develop a coordinated integrated master plan annually for effective Seminary communications in the areas of public relations/marketing, publications/printing, advertising, and special services

? Develops an appropriate schedule for external advertising, news releases, publications schedules and content, etc.

? Oversees and directs the daily operations of the Communications Department

? Supervises the operations of the communications office to ensure that goals are met and projects are completed in a timely manner

? Oversees all marketing and design projects, gives final approval on all projects

? Oversees the hiring of departmental personnel

? Develops, recommends, and manages the budget that is in keeping with a commitment to maximize results and minimize expenditures

? Serves as Managing Editor of the Herald (the official magazine of Asbury Theological Seminary)

? Oversees bidding of projects to determine most cost effective pricing

? Serves as the Crisis Response Coordinator (CRC) on the Crisis Response Team (CRT)

? Educates and trains Seminary staff and faculty on the services of the office of communications and proper utilization of these services

Other Responsibilities:

? Participates in committees and task forces that relate to work of the area

? Follows through with assigned tasks

? Meets with various departments related to communications projects

? Continues to build healthy working relationships across campus to further the mission of Asbury Theological Seminary

Financial Responsibilities/Authority

? Oversees overall budget. It is the responsibility of the Director to determine appropriate spending of these funds for advertising, printing, and general operation of the department.

? It is the responsibility of the Director to monitor the budget monthly to ensure accuracy in the expenditures of the budget.

Direct Supervision & Project/Team Leadership or Training

? Supervises all departmental staff

? Institutional training for proper project and brand guidelines

Tools & Equipment

? Mac Computer, Adobe Creative Suite Software, Printer, Copier

Education/Certification/Training/Experience

? Five to seven years experience in the field of communications, marketing and/or public relations

? Experience supervising staff in the completion of multiple tasks within a production schedule that includes a variety of marketing, printing and web related projects

? Must have ability to communicate Seminary message efficiently to a wide, varied constituency, both verbally and visually

? A background in non-profit/fundraising field a plus

? A commitment to serve and advance the mission of Asbury Theological Seminary and to support the work of the institution

? Well versed in industry printing standards.
