GAINESVILLE, Fla. Paving a highway across South America is providing lessons on the impact of road construction elsewhere.

That's what a University of Florida researcher and his international colleagues have determined from analyzing communities along the Amazonian portion of the nearly 4,200-mile Interoceanic Highway, a coast-to-coast road that starts at ports in Brazil and will eventually connect to ones in Peru.

The results of their five-year study provide a holistic picture of the social, environmental and economic effects of the highway project, including relationships with climate change. Among the findings:

  • Highway paving facilitates migration and population growth in communities, which can result in forest clearing and conflicts over natural resources.
  • Highway paving has left the Amazon rainforest more vulnerable to clearing with fire, which results in carbon emissions.
  • Improved access to markets may give people an economic boost, however, financial security is dependent on access to a range of diverse raw materials whose availability is declining in many areas.

"The vast majority of road studies look at only one of those pieces," said Stephen Perz, a UF sociologist and lead author on the paper, which was published in March in the journal Regional Environmental Change. "But it is necessary to consider what is gained and what is lost by paving highways."

The southwestern Amazon, situated along the borders of Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, is considered a biodiversity "hot spot" because of its extreme variety of plant and wildlife species. Scientists are creating models to better understand how paving of the Interoceanic Highway increases deforestation and degrades forest habitats in this sensitive area. Forest loss and degradation can cause an upsurge in susceptibility to future fires, which results in a forest-burning domino effect that raises carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to climate change. At the same time, the Amazon's worsening droughts, which are also associated with climate change, make fires more dangerous to forests. Perz and his colleagues found that people are often ill-equipped to control fires by themselves and live in places that firefighters cannot access in time to extinguish outbreaks.

The Interoceanic Highway was a decades-long dream of many governments seeking to develop the Amazon and it was finally paved in 2010, although several side roads remain to be connected. The process of paving gave the researchers an opportunity to examine how a road brings opportunities as well as problems to local communities.

"For an anthropologist it's hard, because you kind of romanticize people who live sustainably," said paper author Jeffrey Hoelle, an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder who interviewed Brazilian families when he was a UF graduate student working on the study. "But everyone has basic needs, and if the road gets people better access to education and health care, they are going to take advantage of it."

The researchers say economic success in the region is dependent on whether the road gave people opportunities to use a diversity of materials from the rainforest and the ability to sell their products in regional markets. These factors ultimately contributed to whether communities showed resilience to rapid changes from development.

As construction continues and new roads become off-shoots from the highway, additional rainforest resources will be diminished. Previous roads through Brazil pushed rubber tappers away from their economic livelihood that once was provided by the indigenous rubber plant of the rainforest. This forced workers to relocate to local towns, where they were unprepared to find jobs, often resulting in urban poverty.

In June, world leaders will meet in Brazil at the U.N. Conference on Sustainable Development, otherwise known as the Rio+20, to discuss forests and patterns of production and consumption, among other topics. It comes on the heels of recent protests in Brazil about proposed reforms legalizing the deforestation of millions of acres of the Amazon. And in Peru, protests continue to surround further road development that may venture into areas inhabited by some of the country's isolated rainforest tribes. The researchers in this study are using the information they gathered to contribute to a model that governments and communities can use when planning highways to avoid some of the negative outcomes of paving.

"Is the road good or bad? It depends on who you ask and what you choose to study," Perz said. "But a broader planning approach requires an open, public process in which communities need to participate."

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Research partners in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru include the following institutions: Amazonian University of Pando, Bolivia; Federal University of Acre, Brazil; and the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios, Peru.

Always On Real-Time Access ? FiRE: The Future of Mobile Computing

Posted by chetan in : US Wireless Market , trackback

Last week i had the good fortune of moderating a panel discussion about the future of mobile computing with three really smart CTOs - Henry Tirri, Executive Vice President and CTO, Nokia; James Barrese, CTO, PayPal; and Gavin Michael, Chief Technology Innovation Officer, Accenture.

Courtesy of SNS (original piece here), the summary of the discussion:

HT: Mobile devices use different kinds of connectivity. Unlicensed bandwidth connectivity are higher ids associated with services like Facebook, Twitter. Connectivity doesn?t allow you to swap back and forth between the services.

Tying ID to device vs. tying it to SIM card.

JB: Huge opportunity to decrease friction when consumers try to pay merchants. See huge opportunity to build a digital ID that allows consumers to pay without even taking out their wallet, through digital recognition.

GM: Eventually we will be able to take ID data and use it to create a highly-individualized treatment of the customer. The problem now is that we don?t have the capacity yet. It?s starting, but it?s very small steps. No infrastructure yet.

?Who owns the data? will be a seminal challenge. At the moment there?s no working model, although people are realizing that they have to give up privacy in order to participate in this.

CS: Will different form factors emerge in 5 years?

HT: In the future your computer will consist of multiple devices, will accelerate the evolution. Energy consumption will become a factor. Using small devices that use very little energy to do smaller tasks and a higher variance of devices.

Next generation of computers have individual components that can be used separately, but when you put them together, they work as a whole.

JB: Explosion of innovation offline has met Amazon?s retail choice. Those walking around with devices in their pockets have apps that companies are using to track them.

DM: Consumers are more about tech they?re carrying. Empowered consumers are coming to work for the tech companies and demanding the same capabilities from their enterprise. Using sensor information differently to manage resources, maintenance in a different way. Mobile is affecting deep verticals as well as horizontals.

CS: Where is home automation headed in 5 years?

HT: From a tech perspective, a lot of this can be easily done now, in a cost-effective way: sensors that measure environment, etc.

There has to be some other incentives also. Understanding what people are willing to learn is the key to the status of home mobile. Technologically, it?s not a problem. But it produces a new value chain. Who will take care of and pay for maintenance of sensors? What if they take out your neighbors tv (radio-based)? It will take much longer than 5 years at a wide spectrum, but some user cases may come much earlier.

CS: Ecosystems and platforms:

JB: We?re seeing the full digitization of money and we need key operators to streamline the experience.

CS: Will platforms matter as much in 5 years?

GM: I think there will be two or three that dominate. Platforms will be doing everything they can to bring developers onto their devices. Our view of platforms will broaden. Some will be key in mobile. Others will focus on home automation, etc.

HT: Catastrophe happens when surges are unexpected or vice versa. Energy will be the fundamental unifying issue and limiting factor.

CS: GIven $10 million to invest, what would you spend it on?

JB: The field of payments is exploding. The whole world is being connected to the Internet and how will they trade with each other?

INNOVATIVE HEALTH: Longevity: mind, body and spirit ...

While I pondered what I would say about "Longevity" to a Senior Center group where I was asked to speak, I did two things. I looked up the word in the dictionary and then I asked older people I knew what longevity meant to them so I could borrow from their years of wisdom.

The definition of longevity is: a long duration of individual life, length of life and the study of continuance. Hum, continuance what an interesting word --continue. Who wouldn't want to continue I thought? Isn't that what we all want? I guess I would want to continue if my life would be a long, healthy, rewarding life full of quality experiences and free from pain and other health issues. So, how do we do that?

One way, is by paying attention and by being aware. For example, if we come to an intersection, we need to stop and evaluate our circumstances. If we are driving a car, is the light green? Even if it is green, shouldn't we also look both ways to make sure nobody else is coming? We certainly won't live a long life if we are not aware of possible dangers around us! And, we certainly need a healthy, alert brain to make us aware of them. How do we create a healthy, alert brain?

Certainly a healthy diet is important: eating foods from nature such as nuts, seeds, berries, fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and fish. But staying away from packaged and refined foods is even more important. They are full of fillers, chemicals, food additives, sugar and other toxins no matter how well they are marketed. Don't let the words "all natural" fool you. Read the labels. If there are ingredients you don't understand and can't pronounce on the label, then most likely you are not eating something from nature. Good food, fresh food, raw food heals.

Also important to keeping the brain and body healthy is exercise. Take a walk in nature. Get the muscles moving, the joints oiled, circulation flowing and inhale fresh air to oxygenate the blood and bring your brain alive. Exercise also helps rid the body of toxins and not only toxins from food and the environment, but also emotional toxins. When we exercise, we release "feel good" hormones into the bloodstream. We not only feel happier, but we are more energized too.

Next we need to address the spirit. For one to be happy, balanced and living in harmony, we must have a connection to spirit. Whether we go to church or not, it is important that our hearts are connected to something greater than us. When we wake up every morning with a sense of purpose, then we feel fulfilled. Your purpose can be as simple as putting a smile on your face and making someone else happy. But for the elders that I spoke to at the Senior Center, it was also something more. As a working parent, I didn't have a lot of time to spend with my children. But grandparents, ah, they have time to be patient with the young ones and to pass down to them their stories and experiences. Grandparents can teach the children how to sew and cook, to play an instrument or build something with their own hands. Everyone has something they can share with another. So how do we increase longevity? We get out there and volunteer, enjoy one another's company, play like a child, take walks in nature, learn a new language or teach one to someone else, belong to a club or group, continue to grow, and never retire from life. Make today and every day count.

Survivor pulled from Italy quake rubble after 12 hours

AP / Luca Bruno

People stand in front of a collapsed building in Cavezzo, northern Italy, on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com news services

A 65-year-old woman was pulled out alive after lying for 12 hours in the rubble?of her kitchen in an Italian town hit by Tuesday's deadly earthquake.?

Firefighters told Sky TG24 TV that a piece of furniture, which had toppled over during the 5.8 magnitude quake that left 16 dead and 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, saved the woman from being crushed by the wreckage. She was taken to a hospital for treatment Wednesday.

The building in the town of Cavezzo?had been damaged in a first quake, on May 20, and had been vacant since. The woman had just gone back inside it Tuesday morning to retrieve some clothes when the latest temblor knocked down the building, firefighters said.?

By late Tuesday, the death toll throughout the region stood at 16, with one person missing: a worker at the machinery factory in the small town of San Felice Sul Panaro. Some 350 people also were injured.

A 5.8 tremor destroyed a number of buildings and killed at least 15 people. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Originally government officials had put the death toll at 17, and there was no immediate explanation for the lowered toll.

Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the May 20 temblor, much stronger in intensity, at 6.0 magnitude.

At least 16 die as 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits Italy

The two quakes struck one of the most productive regions in Italy at a particularly crucial moment, as the country faces enormous pressure to grow its economy to stave off the continent's debt crisis. Italy's economic growth has been stagnant for at least a decade, and the national economy is forecast to contract by 1.2 percent this year.

?The area encompassing the cities of Modena, Mantua and Bologna is prized for its super car production, churning out Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; its world-famous Parmesan cheese, and less well-known but critical to the economy: machinery companies.

?After the second earthquake, Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti pledged that the government would do everything possible to restore normal life to the area, which he said was "so important, so productive for Italy,"?the BBC reported.

Government troops had been deployed to the quake-struck areas, and a cabinet meeting would planned for later on Wednesday, according to the BBC.?

An 6.0 earthquake caused a violent tremor in Italy on Sunday, destroying historic buildings, including a cathedral. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

The country's main business association warned on Wednesday that the?earthquakes would have a prolonged impact on the region.

"The earthquakes in May, which had very serious effects on people's lives, will also have prolonged consequences for some of the most important industrial regions in Italy and for an area with strong manufacturing activity," business lobby Confindustria said in an economic report.

"This can only worsen an already very difficult situation," it said.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

First aid for victims of mental health issues | Health and Fitness

Click photo to enlarge

?It?s easy to tell when someone might be suffering from a heart attack, is choking, or is unable to breathe. But what does depression look like? Or anxiety? Have you met people experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors? How would you know and how could you help??

These are the words on a Mental Health First Aid brochure (www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org) describing the intent of the 12-hour educational training program that equips a person to recognize and provide initial assistance to someone experiencing signs of mental illness or substance abuse-disorder. With mental illness more common than heart disease and cancer combined, it is likely that anyone might encounter someone in a mental-health crisis. Mental Health First Aid provides tools and training to be of help, and by educating people about mental illness, also reduces its stigma. Since the launch of MHFA in the United States four years ago, 2,100 instructors have been trained in 48 states, and the course has been taught to over 50,000 people.

Teacher Bryan Gibb is a certified MHFA national trainer and instructor in this international movement. He is director of public education for the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare in Washington, D.C., one of three U.S. organizations disseminating the MHFA curriculum. Gibb has an MBA from George Washington University and a teaching credential from San Francisco State

University.

Q: How and why did the Mental Health First Aid movement get started?

A: It was started in 2001 by Betty Kitchener, an Australian psychiatric nurse who had struggled with depression, and her husband, Tony Jorm, a mental-health researcher. They were on a walk one day and reflecting how valuable it would be if there were a first-aid program for people who are having a mental-health crisis. The program was born, and it is now in 17 countries. In the U.S., we offer it as a free public education program. Our trainees have ranged from receptionists in primary care clinics to police officers to concerned citizens who want to learn more. It?s a simple idea that makes sense to people when they learn more about it. Research also shows that after training, people become more empathetic and comfortable being around individuals with mental illness. Every time I teach the course, I see a greater understanding that people with mental illness have an illness just like those who have a physical illness.

Q: Why is it termed Mental Health ?First Aid??

A: It doesn?t teach a person how to diagnose and treat mental illness any more than a first-aid course teaches you how to diagnose and treat a physical illness. But much like CPR with its action plan of ABC ? airway, breathing, circulation ? we have an action plan that tells you what to do and in what order. Our action plan is spelled ?ALGEE,? which is the pet name for an Australian koala bear and the program?s mascot. A stands for assess for risk of suicide or harm; L stands for listen non-judgmentally; G stands for give reassurance and information; the first E stands for encourage appropriate professional help; and the second E is for encourage self-help and other support strategies. In the course, we describe five categories of mental illness: depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance-use disorders and eating disorders. We provide students with an idea of what they might be seeing, and how to apply ALGEE.

Q: Are mental health emergencies more under-recognized and treated than physical health emergencies?

A: The data suggests that one in four Americans will experience a mental illness or substance-use disorder in any given year. In general, only about 40 percent of those people will seek any kind of treatment. People aren?t always aware of resources, and they are often afraid to ask for treatment for fear that they?ll be fired or branded. Also, people who experience mental illness or are in crisis often don?t know what?s happening to them.

I think things are changing for the better. The recent Mental Health Parity laws require states to offer mental health services in federal programs like Medicare and Medicaid in the same way that they offer physical health services.

Q: What situations might Mental Health First Aid training avert and/or improve?

A: I?m not suggesting that Mental Health First Aid would have averted this tragedy, but some events have spurred Mental Health First Aid training. One was the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in 2011. Our community clinic member in Tucson, along with the state of Arizona, trained 90 instructors in Mental Health First Aid and taught the course to thousands of Arizonans. Tucson saw the shooting as a wake-up call of how they could be better prepared to protect public safety and ensure vulnerable members of the public got needed services.

When someone is starting to experience psychosis, there are signs and symptoms, and people can be trained to pick up on these symptoms and get help.

The sooner someone gets help for a problem, the less likely they are to have a crisis. This is an extreme example, since the vast majority of people who go through our training are more likely to be involved in low-intensity interactions such as having a neighbor with depression or a child who is experiencing anxiety ? but they can still learn to recognize signs and symptoms and encourage self-help strategies.

Cloud Computing Data Breaches - CyberInquirer - The Cyber Law ...

Every year the buzz grows around the Verizon RISK team?s release of its annual Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR).??

As an incident response professional, the DBIR is one of my favorite reads.? This year?s DBIR included analysis of security concerns in cloud computing.? So for those of you interested in cloud security, this is the blog post for you!??

The report, on page 40 states:

?Because working definitions of ?the cloud? are legion, it can be difficult to answer questions about how this paradigm factors into data breaches.? Do we see breaches that compromise assets in an externally-hosted environment that is not managed by the victim?? Yes; absolutely.? Do we see successful attacks against the hypervisor in the wild?? No; not really.??

The Good News

My first comment is that we should be encouraged that the DBIR?s section on Cloud is only a few paragraphs in length versus a few pages.? This is a good sign to our industry that providers are building platforms with security at their core.?

Recently, at the IAPP Global Summit in D.C. I asked Jack Danahy from IBM to comment on the security risks of Cloud in the context of Cybercrime.? His response began with the statement:

??unlike other industries, cloud providers know that security is their number one issue and take it seriously.??

This year?s DBIR seems to confirm that most cloud providers are aggressively managing the risks by hardening their environments.

Mislabeled Cloud Breaches

Often times the term ?cloud? is applied incorrectly to any entity that provides outsourced IT services and infrastructure.? This, unfortunately, has led to breach incidents being mislabeled as ?cloud events? when they were in fact traditional data center and/or enterprise events.?

As an example, the Zappos breach that occurred in January 2012 was labeled a ?cloud breach?.? Though Zappos is owned by Amazon its data center is not part of the Amazon Cloud, nor does it operate in a multi-tenant model.? Zappos? enterprise network was breached resulting in the loss of credit card data.

Protecting the Heart

For this reason the distinction the DBIR makes regarding the lack of ?successful attacks against hypervisor in the wild? is important.?? The hypervisor (virtualization layer) is at the heart of cloud computing, with multi-tenancy being one of the core characteristics of a true cloud environment.? Attacks at the hypervisor level are a major concern in the information security industry and the lack of successful attacks is encouraging.? Below are two reasons on why Cloud providers have been successful in warding off attacks from cyber criminals.?

  • Reason #1:? Avoid the press!? According to the DBIR, with the exception of hacktivists, most cybercriminals select targets based on opportunity and try to avoid the notorious breach.? Targeting a major cloud provider will draw significant press coverage and involvement from law enforcement groups like the U.S. Secret Service and FBI.
  • Reason #2:? Better fences!? I often tease my neighbors that I don?t need to build the perfect fence to keep the deer out of my garden? I only need to build a fence stronger and higher than my neighbor?s fence.? This would encourage the deer go after the easier ?fruit? in my neighbor?s yard.? Cloud providers, with their hardened environments, dedicated security teams and strong patch management services are a ?tougher? field to raid than many other organizations.???

Takeaways and Targets

While the DBIR didn?t have a significant amount of content on cloud computing the content speaks volumes to members of the cloud computing community.? Even in light of the thoughts I shared above, the tremendous aggregation of data combined with the number of new providers positions the cloud market as a tempting target for cyber criminals.

Are you wondering about the benefits of PPC advertising? There are numerous ways in which PPC marketing can be helpful in making money online.

Due to the increasing importance of online advertising, the Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising networks are growing in number. Google Adwords is the most popular ppc system for both advertisers and affiliates.

Yahoo Marketing offers a good alternative to Google and it can be lower in cost dependant upon the specific niche market your business is in. Bing is owned by Microsoft.

PayPerClickAcademy.com is a web site that offers an in depth look into ppc advertising. They provide assistance with finding affiliate offers to promote along with a good introduction to pay per click marketing for newbies.

Let?s look a little more into detail on PPC advertising.

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising will pay the publishers once the visitors click on the ads. On the other hand, the advertisers benefit from it once they make a sale.

Therefore, for both the publishers and the advertisers, the PPC ads really are a key method to obtain online income. The visitors and the advertising networks also form a very important part of the PPC advertising world. Advertising can?t be positioned without the marketing networks and it cannot be seen without actual visitors.

Advantages of Pay Per Click Ads

The publisher is paid per click once the website visitors click on the ads which are posted on their website or blog. You can have just one single blog or several blogs for placing the ads.

The advertisers look for a legitimate web site where their advertisements will be shown. Because of this, the PPC advertising networks form a platform between the advertisers and publishers so that all are able to do business online.

1. With regard to Publishers: Pay Per Click is a beneficial way of making money because the visitors click the ads searching for information. More traffic results in more money from the ads. Also, the cost per click varies as per the keywords and the website with higher quality content generates a great income for that publisher.

2. With regard to Advertisers: Advertisers constantly need to promote their products on a associated web site to ensure that their products reach worldwide. That results in more sales making more profit for them. The price of the advertising is not that high since the advertisers can easily earn profits when their products are purchased.

3. For Advertising Networks: Advertising networks benefit from their business because they obtain good income from the advertisers.

Moreover, they can earn more from other sorts of advertising with their websites. In short, the advertising networks also have a website that becomes a very important platform for online advertising.

4. For Visitors: Those that click the PPC ads are forwarded to the website where they can buy the genuine products.

Some websites sell excellent products and some websites are only for advertising to achieve popularity. Finally, the visitor benefits after buying the product in the comfort of their home.

Online Business While We Snooze

Altogether, when we see the world of Online marketing, it is completely surviving on the basis of online advertising. No matter what, new websites are being created by the publishers so that the PPC advertising makes a good income for them even while they sleep.

The publishers put the ads on their blogs just once and the advertisers create the adverts only once. Both of them can relax and benefit even when they?re fast asleep.

The online advertising has many benefits; however, it also needs great consistency. A publisher remains constant while developing a blog and the advertiser remains consistent until the profit is made. Overall the benefits of the PPC advertising are amazing for everyone at all levels.

Instant View: RIM enlists JPMorgan, RBC in review, warns of loss

(Reuters) - Blackberry-maker Research in Motion, which has steadily ceded market share to Apple Inc and Google Inc in the hotly contested global smartphone arena, has hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help review its struggling business.

The company, which some analysts say may try to put itself up for sale, expects to post an operating loss in the current quarter.

Commentary:

ED SNYDER, ANALYST, CHARTER EQUITY RESEARCH

"RIM is on the downward slope and its going to get steeper. The new management is rightly evaluating all the alternatives to try to stave off what will inevitably be greater losses.

"I don't think anybody's going to buy them so much as split up the company. Jim Balsillie left because he was proposing splitting the company into hardware and software.

"You're not going to sell RIM whole. The most valuable part of RIM today is the server business. The hardware business is a mess and probably going to get worse.

"The biggest problem RIM faces is that it's a very illiquid market in suitors for its phone business. There's very few companies that could exploit RIM's (hardware) assets to make a go of it. Those who can are already beating the pants off RIM.

"On the services side, you could see Microsoft picking that up, or Apple or even Samsung. Anybody who wants a stronger base in the enterprise."

DANIEL ERNST, ANALYST, HUDSON SQUARE RESEARCH

"The layoffs are not new. The most interesting thing that came out of that press release is that they are going to have a loss in some operations. That's certainly below our expectations and below the Street.

"In the broader scheme of things it's not a surprise. RIM is stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. On the high end they're getting crushed by Apple. At the low end they are getting crushed by Android. In overseas markets where you can get a $100 Android phone, it does Web browsing, email and apps. It may not be a great phone but it does all these modern things we're used to.

"RIM doesn't have a product at the high end and doesn't have a product at the bottom end. Meanwhile their core corporate customers have been slowly churning out to Apple. They have a lot of work cut for them.

"RIM's core issue is their product. It doesn't matter how much they cut costs or how many bankers they hire if it doesn't have a product to sell. "

SCOTT SUTHERLAND, ANALYST, WEDBUSH SECURITIES

"They need to take a long hard look at themselves. As long as they stick with this integrated strategy, they'll always be playing catch-up but never get to where Apple and others are. At the end of the day, being an integrated business will go the way of Palm. They really need to rethink how to become part of a bigger ecosystem.

"They have a lot of tangible assets, they have their patent portfolio, they have the enterprise mobility platform and they have the device business. In their integration of all that they're so far behind, I just think sticking to that, maybe you have a long slow death. By separating those units, I think you can get some value off the different pieces.

"Nokia has shown how to do it right. They're going to take a lot of pain over at Nokia, but they've made the tough decision to become part of a larger ecosystem."

JOHN JACKSON, ANALYST, CCS INSIGHT

"By engaging the bankers, you just have that elevated possibility of strategic action. Nothing strategic happens until you hire the bankers.

"RIM has assets that might be valuable to various parties broken up, they might be valuable collectively. I think there are quite a number of plausible scenarios out there, not the least of which is still an organic recovery. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that they can't restructure effectively.

"It is clear that the investment community has lost patience with RIM and that is going to weigh on their ability to recover organically.

"There is zero surprise in the matter that RIM is guiding toward on operating loss this quarter, and that they're going to continue to have a tough time - no real surprises there.

"The collective assets that comprise BB10 are formidable and I think the market overlooks that.

"The market has perhaps been a little bit myopic in not appreciating the extent to which those assets look like the future."

EHUD GELBLUM, ANALYST, MORGAN STANLEY

"Bankers do a lot more than buy and sell, certainly finding a buyer is one the things they do, but in this case it would be an option of last resort.

The bankers "are there to help them restructure, from outsourcing pieces of it, selling divisions etcetera so that the cost structure will come down.

"They will be a much, much smaller company. They have to bring down the cost structure in a hurry so they don't get to the point that they go bankrupt until they have a new product. Is there a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? The odds are definitely against them.

"They could have the best product but the way the market has developed - set up for Android and iOS and maybe Microsoft - it's really hard to see it would be receptive for a fourth."

MICHAEL JAMES, SENIOR TRADER, WEDBUSH MORGAN, LOS ANGELES

"Clearly a big disappointment. I can't say it's going to take people completely by surprise from a trader standpoint, but the magnitude of the miss: they didn't quantify it, they just said it's going to be an operating loss. And the consensus estimate for the quarter is 41 cents, so you know it's going to be at least 42 cents below estimates.

"I don't think it's a surprise that guidance is being lowered, but I think the magnitude of the disappointment below estimates is definitely a negative surprise.

"They did say that they hired JP Morgan and RBC to evaluate options, so that might be a potential saving grace for the stock. I don't think any options are off the table, whether it be licensing their proprietary software or putting the company completely up for sale.

"It is further validation that the iPhone and Android are continuing to dominate the smartphone space, and you are seeing the clear losers being RIM and Nokia."

ALEX GAUNA, ANALYST, JMP

"We were all anticipating this anyway. But there isn't a lot of detail around it. How deep is the loss?

"They're clearly moving in the wrong direction right now, so I found it a little frustrating that there wasn't more detail. It wasn't as helpful as it could have been.

"If they're really trying to repair their relationship with Wall Street and investors, this was not all that helpful."

COLIN GILLIS, ANALYST, BGC PARTNERS

"Everyone talks about the transition, but in order to have a transition, you need to have something to transition to.

"We're not even at the point where this is a transition, this is just a downward slope right now.

"They're talking about (Blackberry) 10, but 10 is going to be in the back half of the year... That's also part of it."

MARK MCKECHNIE, ANALYST, THINKEQUITY LLC

"Clearly its a special situation stock. It's having trouble competing with Android and Apple for the No.3 place.

"We're looking at this as a salvage, value type situation. The valuable assets in RIM are cash on the balance sheet, the recurring enterprise software revenue, and their patents.

"When I talk about RIM's valuation I talk about $10 per share for the value of their patents."

Britain's PM eats humble pie over snack tax

Matt Cardy / Getty Images, file

In days gone, pasties were the food of miners and farmers -- a robust parcel that (so legend has it) could be dropped steaming hot down a mine shaft or thrown over a high hedge to the agricultural laborers on the other side.

By Chris Hampson, NBC News Director of International News

LONDON -- We're a placid bunch, us Brits.

You can call us names and poke us in the eye and we'll pretty much stand there and take it.

So pity the poor misguided chaps who run this country and who decided to try their luck by introducing a tax on ... pasties.

Man the barricades!

For those who are not among the cognoscenti, a pasty is a traditional and tasty food that resembles a meat and potato pie. It has almost iconic status in its place of origin, the distant and beautiful county of Cornwall.

In days gone by, it was the food of miners and farmers -- a robust parcel of pastry (so legend has it) that could be dropped steaming hot down a mine shaft to the menfolk below or thrown over a high hedge to the agricultural laborers on the other side.

According to folklore, in one end there was savory meat, spuds and turnip and -- on the other side of a pastry wall -- fruit jam.? Entree and dessert all in one steaming package.? Genius.

No wonder a simpler version was adopted all across the country.? It has become a staple of many a working lunch, snatched from the oven of a high street food store and wolfed down on the nearest bench or at a desk.

Library opened by Mark Twain falls victim to austerity cuts

So into this culinary sanctum stumbled the British government.? Always anxious to raise more cash in these dark days of austerity, the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne decided back in March to slap a 20 percent tax on hot snacks like pasties, pies and sausage rolls.

Justin Tallis / AFP ? Getty Images

Bakers and their supporters hold pastries as they gather outside the prime minister's official residence in London in April to protest and deliver a petition against the so-called pasty tax.

The plan was to raise an extra $150 million.

But Osborne -- a millionaire whose diet does not apparently include pasties -- had no idea that he was about to walk into a political furore that we have seldom seen since the 1990 Poll Tax riots.?

"Half-baked," screamed the tabloids.? "Save our pasties," the nation echoed as people licked their lips and bared their teeth.

A newspaper hired an actress dressed as Marie Antoinette to pursue the hapless Chancellor -- a reminder of her infamous quote that led to revolution across the Channel: "Let them (the poor) eat cake."

The accident-prone Conservative-led government had walked into a minefield of meat and potato proportions. Politicians rushed to have their photos taken stuffing pasties down their throats.

NBC?News'?UK partner?ITV?News on pasty debate

Even Prime Minister David Cameron was wrong-footed when asked in Parliament when HE had last eaten a pasty.? He claimed to have done so at a shop that closed down some years ago. Ouch!

So yesterday Cameron and Osborne decided on a change of diet: humble pie.

The Sun's front page story on the British government's 'pastygate' climbdown on Tuesday.

In a humiliating climb-down, the government was forced to abandon its snack tax.

Well, almost.? In a wonderfully British muddle, pasties will avoid tax if they are hot but cooling down out of the oven.? If the shop keeps them hot -- that will be another 20 percent please.

No matter.? Today's papers speak for the nation in declaring victory, with the mass market Sun saying it best: "Pasty la vista, taxman."

Peace has broken out in Britain's leafy suburbs and town centers.?One joyous Cornish Member of Parliament said there'd be "dancing in the streets."

But the message to our politicians is clear.

There is, after all, a line you cannot cross.? Our trains may not run when it rains or snows; you may not get through airport passport controls for hours; but mess with our favourite foods and we WILL bite back.

Classic Cars Collection: Auto insurance and driverless vehicles

In the movie Minority Report, Stephen Spielberg has an extended sequence showing cars of the future being assembled and how they drive themselves. It's pleasing how well a film made some ten years ago has been predicting the future. The multitouch computer interfaces are here as are the retina scanners. Facial recognition software is routinely used at airports and other safety-critical locations, and we are now carrying pads around on which we can read the latest newspapers and books. Strangely enough, the driverless vehicles are also on our streets being tested. That might surprise you. Except the states of California and Nevada have already passed laws making it legal to have these vehicles drive you. So what's the problem?

In a sense, we have most of the technology already available off-the-shelf. Cameras can be fitted to give 360 degree vision. Radar can tell the vehicle when anything else is moving nearby. GPS transponders tell the vehicle exactly where it is. Computers can easily be configured to talk to each other so that each vehicle can be told when there's something else nearby on the road. We have voice recognition software which will allow owners to input the desired destination and route preferences. Many of the standard vehicles are already drive-by-wire, i.e. electronic rather than mechanical links to the accelerator, brakes, and so on. All we need are the software packages to interpret all this data and translate it into instructions for the vehicle. For the record, in March, Google announced that its driverless car has traveled over 200,000 miles on roads in all types of traffic conditions. There has not yet been an accident. Indeed, so confident is Google that it has begun discussions both with government and the insurance industry.

The theoretical advantages are enormous. A computer never takes its "eyes" off the road to answer a cell phone or comb its hair. It never drives too close to the vehicle in front. There's no reckless overtaking or speeding. If this technology was adopted across all our roads, the number and seriousness of traffic accidents would be significantly reduced. Given that more than 30,000 people are killed on our roads every year, this would be a major improvement. With the number of accidents falling, insurance costs would fall and premium rates could be reduced. Except we all know technology can break down. There's a world of difference between trusting the PC on your table at home to keep your personal information safe and allowing the same PC to drive you at 70 mph down a busy interstate.

It seems the discussions with the auto insurance industry have been going well because Google recently announced a more positive testing program for the software. Instead of this being ten or more years in the future, it has lost its speculative nature and could be approved in the next two or three years. The question for you as individual drivers is whether you will surrender your hands-on control to a computer in return for significant reductions in auto insurance rates. It's actually a very good deal and only dangerous if a few reckless people insist on continuing to drive themselves or it amuses hackers to take over vehicles and stage crashes.

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB storage, unlimited streaming

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB cloud and unlimited streaming of 19 million tracks for a price

We already knew Samsung was dipping a toe in the music market, and now it's officially landed. Music Hub will launch with the GSIII in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It's fair to say the electronics giant will be trampling on a fair number of toes, with Music Hub offering both streaming -- from 7 Digital's catalog of 19 million -- as well as recommendations, and a 100GB iTunes Match-esque cloud service. You'll need to trump up £ / €9.99 (about $16) if you want the premium features (unlimited streaming from the catalog and the online storage of your library,) while the free option will let you listen to matched / purchased tracks anywhere (from your phone or the web interface). Samsung's clearly taking a holistic approach with Music Hub, and it'll be a standard feature on its phones going forward (plus potentially Smart TVs and even Fridges). It might not just be restricted to its own hardware eco-system either, with some talk of it coming to other mobile devices in the future, officially, this time.
