A new school with a Hindu ethos is set to open in the sprawling Indian suburb of Phoenix here early next year, where languages such as Hindi and Tamil will be taught apart from the usual South African curriculum.
Alongside the government Education Ministry curriculum, the Phoenix Hindu School will offer yoga, meditation and Indian music in an attempt to revive the Hindu culture among the youth.
The school, opening in January next year, will be linked to the Westville Hindu School, the first of its kind established in 2000, in the city which is host to nearly a third of the estimated 800,000 Hindus in the country, descended from the first settlers who arrived in 1860 as indentured labourers for sugarcane plantations.
Acting principal of the Phoenix Hindu School, Sunil Singh, said Hindu youth had lost touch with their cultural and religious roots through predominantly Western influences which had permeated their minds.
?The Hindu Schools have been established to ensure that our children learn Indian languages such as Hindi and Tamil, thereby ensuring their preservation,? Singh said.
Ten teachers will offer instruction to children from three years old in the pre-school phase and from Grades one to seven.
Extra teachers would be hired dependent on the number of pupils enrolled, Singh said.
Consideration would be given at a later stage to increase capacity to accommodate pupils up to the final year of Grade 10.
