The biggest move of the offseason happened yesterday (yes, even bigger than the release of Peyton Manning) when the Washington Redskins traded their first round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014 as well as their second round pick in 2012 to move up four spots and take over the second overall selection from the St. Louis Rams.
The move all but assures that Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will be selected by the Redskins in April's draft which means that the top two picks are essentially locked in. With USC OT Matt Kalil considered a shoo in for the third pick to the Vikings, there are really only three picks in front of the Jaguars that don't seem as if they've already been decided.
That leaves the Browns picking fourth, the Buccaneers picking fifth and the Rams picking sixth before the Jaguars go on the clock at seventh overall.
While Cleveland missed out on the opportunity to draft Griffin III for themselves, the Browns and the Buccaneers are largely unaffected by the trade. The Browns have needs all the way across the board so they could go a number of directions.
The Buccaneers have a strong need at cornerback so LSU's Morris Claiborne makes plenty of sense.
Now the new team in the formula is the St. Louis Rams who will now select just ahead of the Jaguars. In a poll on SBNation's Rams site, Turf Show Times, the majority of the site's visitors voted that Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon is their favorite candidate for the sixth overall selection. This morning over 80% of their visitors said that Blackmon is worth a selection that early.
I've long felt that Blackmon isn't worth a top ten pick; however, while fans obviously aren't calling the shots, they're usually pretty tuned in to their teams' draft needs. Considering that as well as Blackmon's relatively solid Pro Day on Friday it's not entirely unfeasible to think that a team like the Rams could pull the trigger on Blackmon just before the Jaguars go on the clock.
Ultimately, the Jaguars are largely unaffected by the trade between the Redskins and the Rams besides the fact that it eliminates a lot of the ambiguity of the picks in front of the Jaguars. Perhaps, the most important way it does affect them is that it eliminates a team with a quarterback need in front of the Jaguars, increasing the likelihood of a team trading up for Tannehill.
