As we like to convey at Public Speaking for Kids, the path towards making your child a great public speaker, and overall effective communicator, depends on small activities in daily life.
Whether your child has yet to deliver his first public speech or has been winning competitions for several years, these tips will keep them developing basic skills for effective public speaking.
The Weekly Shop?
This will be most effective for those aged 7-10. When you are out shopping with your child, encourage them to speak to the sales assistants and checkout staff. Encourage them to go beyond the mere asking of receipts and carrier bags. Get them to start conversations by asking simple questions such as, how are you today?
Simplify?
This will work best for those aged 11-14. Once a week, ask them to take a complex issue and explain it in the most simple way possible. This could be the offside rule in football or a summary of the eurozone crisis for example. They may have to do a bit of research which will boost their speech writing skills. If you really want to test them, ask them to deliver such an explanation via an impromptu speech. This will test their ability to think on their feet.
?The Persuasion Test
This will work best with children aged 15-18. Next time you have a refund to claim, ask your child to communicate the case. Be there with them and assess how well they convey the problem and how effectively they make the pitch for a refund. Remember to tell them it is about building empathy for their problem, not trying to make the retailer submit to their aggression.
With these tasks you can encourage and assess your child?s communication skills; boosting their effective public speaking ability, confidence, impromptu and persuasive speaking skills.
