A Proper English Tea | FoodsA-Z.blogspot.com

Tea is a great hot drink to warm your bones on a cold day. It can be a cold drink to compliment food or summer heat. There have even been reports recently that drinking tea offers a variety of health benefits including fighting cancer and other diseases. Drinking tea is more than providing a refreshment. It's a meal.

Roots of Afternoon Tea

Serving as a traditional aspect, drinking tea was a British and Victorian culture dating back to the 1600's. At that time, the last meal of the day for the gentry was served late in the evening often after the children were asleep.. The wait between meals became too much for the Duchess of Bedford, Anna Marie Russell. Midday snacking helped her achieve comfort before dinner.

She started taking a cup of tea and sandwiches, light cakes, or biscuits in the afternoon. Eventually she invited friends to join her in this simple meal. Not long after the practice of afternoon tea was a standard in homes throughout the United Kingdom. Small cucumber sandwiches and ham sandwiches became tradition. Tradition brought tea to be drank with sweet desserts like sweet breads, cakes and scones.

Afternoon Tea is Different from High Tea

Those belonging to England's working class were not accustomed to snacking or small meals with tea and other items. There jobs would last into the night or they would work the farms for hours on in. However the tradition of taking tea was not lost on them. Tea was served in the late evening and known as high tea.

The Principal meal of the day was high tea. So high tea is a full meal served around sunset. A variety of foods including sandwiches, fish, eggs and other meats are served during high tea. In working class homes, the term High means main rather than haughty. High tea was a larger meal presented at a days end.

The Custom Today

Homeowner's do not take part of afternoon tea as often as many hotels and restaurants. Tourists experience afternoon tea in the United Kingdom. Most people today when they take an afternoon tea will pair it with biscuits, a light cookie. Americans generally take coffee breaks instead of tea breaks.

United States has some hotels that participate in high tea. Many people have instilled afternoon tea into their traditions.
